"Medienf端hrerschein" introduced in schools - Germany

To produce media-savvy kids

Gen
Bavaria has just introduced a "media license" -- certification for kids that they understand basic things about the media. The state's info packet covers mobile phones, the internet, game consoles, television, and print. There are certificates for each area, which the kids get after having classroom instruction on that area. The whole idea is to make sure that kids can:

  • Listen
  • Recognize and critically observe identification figures on television
  • Analyze and evaluate television advertising
  • Chat online
  • Assess risks and gains from computer games
  • Interpret print materials

It's just aimed at kids in third and fourth grades. Next year Bavaria's bringing out a similar package for adults -- I don't know how it's to be delivered though, maybe people who're interested would just pick it up at... city hall. Many parents (and many government officials) don't understand all the internet stuff going on. Would you be interested in such packets? Have your kids got them? Are they doing something like this in your German state?

I took a similar course in school when I was 13 or 14 called something like "Viewing Skills". Ours was a little more broad, teaching stuff like breaks in action between movie shots along with analyzing advertising. Obviously nothing about mobile phones or online chatting and such, being the old woman I am. I thought it was excellent for learning the different ways companies try to convince you to buy their products. I would think if targetted right, kids in 3rd and 4th grade would get a lot out of such a course.
