I know there are a few TT'ers out there that are Liverpool fans (like me), are there many Chelsea fans?
Liverpool / Chelsea / or what ever fan, anyone interested in going to GM's to watch the champions league match on Wed. 27th April?
K.O is at 20:45 but i think we should met up a bit before (TBD)
If there is enough interest we should reserve a table!

You won't be able to book a table for Wednesday. They don't let you book for major football events. It will be first come, first served I'm afraid.
We got there about 7.30 for the last game and it was filling up pretty quickly then.

Just to add a big more spice. FA have asked if Liverpool win to give an extra place to Liverpool. Now the question is IF (god that's a big IF) Liverpool do win, and UEFA say no, will the FA give Everton's fourth place finish to Liverpool for winning the competition !

If Liverpool win this years competition then they should get the spot ahead of Everton. Having said that though, personally I would kick Man U in to the UEFA Cup and allow Everton in to the Chumps League.

Liverpool or Everton for the 4th Champions League SpotThe extra sppot would be for everton, as the defending champs are automatically in.

@ Wee_Man - Err ? no, only the first 4 teams in the League qualify for Chumps League, if a team wins the Chumps League and finishes outside of their local league qualifing, then it is a decision of the local FA to request this at the expense of the final placed qualifying team. Winners DO NOT get automatically entered !
So in this case Everton. This happened a few years ago, when Real won, but finished 5th, so the Spanish FA took the place away from Villarreal and entered them into the UEFA Cup and gave the spot to Real.
UEFA have now confirmed they will not give an extra spot to Liverpool if they do win it, so now Liverpool MUST win, then the FA have to make the decision what to do !

The position has changed as far as i am aware, the FA has to decide whether to let the holders or the 4th placed team, this was announced by eufa this morning.
Wee Mun
Apr 26 2005, 10:16 am
There is a precedent, as it has happened once before:
Spain were faced with the same dilemma five years ago and opted to allow European Cup holders Real Madrid - who finished fifth in the Primera Liga - to defend their title and entered fourth-placed Real Zaragoza in the Uefa Cup.
pepper
Apr 26 2005, 10:17 am
Hmm... well you are right now, it is a decision of the FA, but this has always been that the winners DO NOT AUTOMATICALLY qualify.
Boy I have been checking this regularly, as Liverpool get closer to the Chumps League final, and looking further and further away from getting 4th !
Cannot find the BBC page I was looking at, that stated this !

Wee Mun - Pepper is right in what he is saying. The winners of the champions league do not qualify for the next seasons competition. To qualify a team needs to finish in their leagues qualifying spots. As it stands Liverpool wont qualify in 5th. So its up to the FA to decide whether to give it to Liverpool or let Everton have it.

If the FA follow the precedent set by the spanish FA, then Liverpool would get the spot.

norwich would have given ac a better game than man ure in last 16.

As it stands - UEFA have 'expressed the opinion' that they would prefer League standing to count over qualification from winning the previous years competition, but the final decision rests with the FA. The FA had asked for another place but this was dismissed out of hand (kind of understandable as it would mean robbing some other countries qualification and repercussions from that are not worth bothering their haaars about)
This is all dependent upon Liverpool beating Chelsea over two legs - which they haven't managed to do even once on three outtings this season.
And on top of that, it's depent on Everton qualifying - although 1 win and a draw would do and seems attainable - 2 wins from 4 would guarantee this position.

Why not let the 2 teams (Everton and Liverpool) play for the last spot if it came down to it? Seems fairest to me...

If Liverpool win the Chumps league, then fair enough, they should go in the comp, if they dont, then Everton should get it.
I dont see the point in not allowing the previous years champions in the competition. Supid rule.

boomtown_rat
Apr 26 2005, 12:59 pm
I'm not sure they should allow the previous years' winners in. Surely it should be based purely on the qualification criteria (i.e. from the national leagues). After all, Olympic champions aren't automatically entered the next time. In fact World Cup winners aren't either these days. Why not allow the previous years runners up in too - after all they did pretty well to get to the final

Previous years winners should always qualify, its an honourable tradition that should be kept.
If you put it like that, why should a host nation qualify? Just cos the stadiums of that country are being used, doesnt give an automatic right to play.
Being the current holder IMHO does.

aren't we talking Champions League here? I agree with you about the champions qualifying bit but not when it is at the expense of a 'normal' team. There should be an extra space for winners irrespective of country
