Advice on cancelling a 2-year dsl contract - Germany

What to expect?

mcisternas
Hi guys,
I know this is a usual topic but I didn't find anything that matches for my case.
So, last January I got my Vodafone dsl connection working, but this month I moved to another place in which there is already an internet connection, so I won't need mine anymore.
I heard about this 1+1 year contracts, in which you can cancel in the end of the 1st year, but my office mate (german), was reading my contract and it seems I have no easy way out. It is for 24 months.
This guy was scaring me telling me that maybe if vodafone is nice enough they would probably offer me to buy my way out, for example paying half of what's left of the contract. Is that so?
I went to the vodafone shop in which I hired it, but they couldn't tell me anything, just to send letters to vodafone. I also heard that there is the possibility to give away the contract to someone else, but I'm not sure I can find someone easily in the short term.
Any advice???

thanks in advance!

Your co-worker is right. Chances are they will offer you to transfer the connection to the new place for a 100€ fee and keep the current contract (which means you can get out of it in Jan 2011 if you cancel in time) or waive the fee and have you sign a new 24 month contract. Getting out prematurely (if possible at all) will definitely require some hand wringing and money.

Hi mcisternas,
I was in a same situation and i got rid of this 2 years contract pretty easily. I had my contract with O2. Simply write a letter stating the problem.

Attach with it:

1). Last DSL bill from the service provider which is offering internet connection at your new apartment.
2). your new (city) address registration copy.

And you're good to go.

It's definitely worth a shot. However, legally they are not obliged to let your out of your contract, so it depends on the ISP whether they do it or not. In my experience 1&1 is not very 'kulant' in this situation, but no harm in trying. It costs them about 70€ to set up your connection and they pay something like 17€/mo to Deutsche Telekom to rent the line, so DSL providers will usually be reluctant to let customers go before they have at least broken even.
