Anyone have any experience acquiring and sending M-bags internationally from the lovely, customer friendly Deutsche post?

Ask your post office? - We did. The lady hadn't ever heard of M-bags, so we just bought a linen shopping-bag, stuffed our books in (individually wrapped in freezer-bags with the adress on every item), made a card with the adress and tied it to the bag, knotted together the handles and had the whole thing sent to Ireland. No problem. The lady at the post-agency was in constant touch with her helpline, who guided her through the procedure. Probably a real post office may know how to do it correctly.

I think M-bags may have been discontinued in Germany. I believe you can still send one from the U.S. to Germany, but not the other way around.

I used to send M-bags from the US and pick them up at Der Zoll when it was in the big building near the Hbf. Then Der Zoll moved to Garching and it wasn't worth the time and effort for me to schlepp up there from Maxvorstadt and drag the thing back.
But M-bags are alive and well nonetheless. Try here:
Deutsche Post M-bags
If that doesn't work, go here:
Post Site
and type M-Beutel into the search field.
