The Bear and The Jubilee by Anton Chekhov
More about the plays...
Anton Chekhov's The Bear and The Jubilee are two one-act vaudevilles that belong to the subgenre of comedy known as the farce. You can find in them the roots of the Theatre of the Absurd as well as Chekhov’s incomparable sense of humour, which is satirical, ironic, even grotesque at times, showing us the ridiculous in everyday life.
The Bear reveals what happens when a determined creditor goes to collect on a debt from a grieving widow and ends up biting off more than he can chew. The Jubilee centres on a bank manager’s preparations for his bank’s 50th anniversary celebration being upset by the appearance of his frivolous wife and an unexpected female visitor. Director Ravi Rege brings both plays to life in vaudeville fashion – a Russianised version of the French comedic genre (incorporating music, song and dance) that was a highly popular theatrical form on the Moscow stage in the 1880s and the only one that could get past the censors of the day.
Anton Chekhov was awarded the coveted Pushkin Prize for Literature in 1888. His fame today rests primarily on his plays and on his reputation as an astute chronicler of Russian street life.
