Britons bad at learning foreign languages

Just another silly report to point out how us English speakers are too arrogant to bother learning a foreign language.


Just to note:
Manchester, London and Edinburgh have the most foreign-language speakers.
More women than men speak a second language.
Women tend to speak one language to a higher level, while men speak a smattering of several languages.

when it says german and french, is there not some growth happening in other languages like spanish and italian, even in the UK? my cousin who is only a couple of years younger totally ignored german and french for favour of the more "glamorous" languages that were starting to be offered at her school, while i never had the option of anything but german and french.

i wrote an email the other week, only a short one but in german, and the reply i got was in english. i showed what i wrote to a german friend who said it was in decent german, yet the person felt oblidged to reply in english. no wonder english speaking people dont bother. it really annoyed me as i'd made an effort!

love the danish figure! considering a good percentage of danes are ethnicly classed as german living on ex german territory. how bad could they do the survey?
