We have had threads and polls and topics in the past on German beers, best beers, where to get foreign beers etc etc etc. but there are so many TT members now, and alot of them have been won over to the drinking of weissbier, as I certainly have, and I'd like a view on peoples
Weissbier tastes. 10 years ago, I hated it, but now I love the stuff, but at the same time still find Erdinger to be completely rubbish. For me, its normally Paulaner, it must be said, but as I sent them about 3,000,000 tokens for some offer about 3 months ago, and have not heard back, so I might well have to change my brew in protest. Whats your tipple?

Good poll Don, its Hacker Pschorr for me. But how the hell does one say the name?
First time I tried a
Weissbier I thought it looked like the cloudy home brew I used to make out of kits when I was 17!
Erdinger is the dregs.

Augustiner for me. I think it's way above the others list above. Next would be Andechs but that's not as common. I like Augustiner better because the
Andechs has a lot more pronounced citrus flavor.

mr riina sir, not for me to complain but...
you forgot UNERTL ! which not only tastes yummy but as it doesnt ship well is real "local" bier. its also bio apparently. a must for every weissbier person.
you also forgot SCHNEIDERWEISSE, which for historical reasons should be included. in fact it should be grtho's first bier of choice. Herr Schneider was the first man to brew
Weissbier in munich outside of the royal court! fcking communist or what...

There's a cracking little kneipe on Kaiserstr called
Kaizergarten. It's an Ayinger bar which is really nicely decorated according to the seasons.
I'd recommend it to anyone as they do a wicked selection of Breakfasts incl Würst & Weiss beer. Gets really busy by 11 am with the local younger crowd ( A good sign...No old men blowing pipe smoke at you!). From healthy yoghurts etc, fry ups - to Smoked salmon & prosecco, my fav Yum!

I love Weissbier. There are SO many good ones...I like:
Dunkles Weizen = Holledauer Dunkles (from Schlossbrauerei Au)
Helles Weizen = Schwarz Bräu, Unertl, Grünbach, Paulaner, Huber, Weihenstephaner, Fransiskaner, Ustersbacher
Kristall Weizen = Weihenstephaner

That´s due to an ester called isoamyl acetate produced during fermentation. I once left a crate full of empty Huber Weisse bottles in my car for several days, when I went back, the whole car smelled like bananas

I'll add my vote for Unertl. Sorry Lupo, don't rate Weihenstephan in any of its forms! Up in Franconia there's hundreds of different weissbiers brewed so, somewhere there, lies my favourite weissbier. All I have to do is go and find it!

I vaguely remember something from the Erdinger brewery tour about an animal product being used somewhere in the production, but the aimal product itself does not make it into the end product... can anyone clarify that? or was I in a daze watching the machines (not) whizzing by?

I wasn't on the tour, but I had a girlfirend who was vegetarian. She would wlays check a list of beers if they used,
isinglas. This is something used in the filtering phase of certain beers. i am not certain which ones or why, but this or gelatin as a filter is what concerns vegetarians, eventhough it will not be in the final product. But I would ask Lupo for the correct reason, as I am certain he would know.

Finings are used to filter the beer, and they are made from the swimbladders of fish. You don't actually drink this - they stay with the sediment at the bottom of the beer. So technically the beer isn't vegetarian, but I guess that depends on how strict you are.
Winegirl
Apr 19 2005, 2:47 pm
Isinglas is also used in wine fining. It is a fish protein that binds tannins. The large bound complex drops out of the solution as a solid. This is done to make the wines smoother when they are drunk young. There are other options including egg whites, blood, gelatin and polymers. Wines never write which if any they have used and it varies year to year. Sorry to let the vegetarians know this, I won't get started on other well-loved food products.

I have often claimed that it tastes like bananas, but the Bavarians always laugh at me. Other foreigners have noticed it too, but I have yet to find a Bavarian who has noticed this.
I voted for other (Unertl) too.

An animal product in Erdinger? I highly doubt it, I guess it depends on the definition of "animal"...I know one Korean whose nickname is the "Bier Vernichtungs Machine" - who can display quite the animal behaviour

Anyway, I can´t imagine Erdinger using the kinds of finings mentioned. To my knowledge, finings are not used in Hefe Weizenbiers here in Germany, else they wouldn´t have the lovely and characteristic Hefe/Protein haze! In Germany, Kristallweizens and most other clear beers i.e. non "trüb" are indeed filtered and stabilized but all within the confines of the Reinheitsgebot (guaranteeing the purity of the final product.) None, as far as I know, use animal products to achieve this. The typical filtration medium is Diatomaceous Earth which are the fossilized remains of small diatoms (maybe that´s what they meant. Or maybe they meant the yeast itself -those happy little buggers!) and the typical stabilizer medium is called PVPP.
As to foreign beers, there are alternatives to isinglas as Wine Girl pointed out. Vegetarians may want to consider "Irish Moss", a plant; or "Agar", made from algae or seaweed which perform the same way as isinglass (although I´ve read not as good.) What do vegetarians think of the "killing" of all these yeast cells?
Sanielle
