Breaking news... as above.

US President Barack Obama has been awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for his "extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy".

From BBC Online:

US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee said he was awarded it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

There were a record 205 nominations for this year's prize. (...)

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said as the prize was announced.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Honestly, I like the guy and all... but this is a bit much.

I prefer it when this goes to relatively unknown people who struggle peacefully against immense adversity. Stuff like this just makes it seemed like a cheap political trick.

Surely there are some Iranians in jail who deserve this more.

So does that mean the Nobel prize for Science goes to some dude running a meth lab?

Just checked the news channels.

May be they are making up for not giving Olympics to Chicago to make the Obamas happy.

For all I know, he did not deserve to be getting the Nobel Prize for peace.

Who is "they"?

Now he is in good company like Kissinger and Yasser Arafat.

The powers that be, Kay!

I'm also disappointed that he won this. Oh well.

No, Obama will get that one too.

What a complete crock of Bull****.

The guy has not accomplished ANYTHING yet, he's only been on the international scene for a few months.

I guess the Nobel Peace Price has become little more than a popularity contest.

Amusing that he won it the day we are about to blow up the moon

I don't think it should have gone to him, either, but look on the bright side, people - Nicolas Sarkozy was on that list as well!

And how pissed off do you think Sarko is right now! Poor guy. Always coming in second/shorter to Barack Obama. (Did you see those group pics of Sarko and the Obamas in which Sarko stood on tippy-toes? Sweet and pathetic at the same time.)

It's a pretty big prize for 'not being GWB'. I like Obama, and as a contrast to the previous President he really does shine, but that he qualifies for the Nobel Prize is a bit of a stretch. Like there's nobody else who does good work who could use the $900k more.
Bumpy
He being awarded the title makes a mockery of those people who have struggled a lifetime to achieve that aim.

The fact that Obama has won this, probably shows that there were no competing candidates for this year. Also, part of the reason why he won is probably because of using "Mahatma Gandhi's" name, all the time (and the photo of him in Whitehouse)? (He is doing good, but I don't know if he is really following the principles).

I agree that he is new to international scene and that it's too much. But there are few strategies that he used, which has reduced the tensions in this world - Policies related to Iraq/Guantanamo Bay/Muslims, his speech in Egypt (which was actually a strategy), etc (I don't know if all the credit goes to him, but as a President, he's the main candidate).
