Travel Cards - Sold on the buses?

Answer: No. Must be bought in advance

Another question. Are all travel cards able to be purchased on the buses?

[adminsplit] [/adminsplit]
grtho
No. In the city of Munich you can only buy a limited range of tickets from the machines on buses and trams. Different situation in the districts surrounding Munich that are part of the MVV system.

"Travelcard" as in "Isarcard" the weekly/ monthly / annual travel pass has to be bought in advance. You can buy it at many shops in Munich very easily.
Marshbot
Hmmm. So say on a Monday when the travel card has expired - and you intend to buy a new one from a kiosk at the Ubahn - you would have to pay extra for the bus fare to get to the Ubahn/shop etc?
UrbanAngel
u have till 12pm on the next working day when ur card expires to get a new ticket, so no.

ie if i have a month pass and the 31st is a saturday, i can technically travel for free until 12pm monday morning. but don't quote me on this!!!

it's a provision because some s/ubahn stops dont have ticket offices, only machines, which only take pretty much exact cash, and no ec cards.
grtho
Correct, Isarcards are valid unti 1200 on the first weekday after they expire.

You can of course renew them in advance whih saves queueing!
gooner_gal
or get a year subscription and only pay for 10 months and get them sent to your door biggrin.gif
Marshbot
I thought so. My problem was that I sometimes wouldn't leave on a Monday before 12 - so to avoid the problem I'd either just leg it or if I was short on time risk catching the bus and tell myself it's sweet anyway cause I'm buying a ticket at the other end.
I didn't realise you could renew them early though. Will look into that. Cheers!
UrbanAngel
gooner_gal do u still have to go all the way to poccistr for this?
i went to the MVV Centre in MPlatz and they reufsed to give me any info about it, and sent me to pocci. i didnt go cos i dont have time to go there, nor did they even bother to give me the address¨! all i wanted to ask was the price and what papers i would need to apply.
gooner_gal
nope...you can now order online.

only in German though am afraid
grtho
huh.gif UrbanAngel becasue the customer centre at Marienplatz was specificly openend as Poccistrase is too inconvenient for normal people (excluding the daleks who work in KVR ph34r.gif ) I got my Isarcard Abo from them no probs.
Darkknight
Does this "Good till first working day after expiring" thing also work for the GruneCard?
grtho
Yes. Also for Grünekarte. cool.gif
UrbanAngel
Thanks muchos for the link. There were 2 options :

IsarCard Abo - 10 monatl. Abbuchungen, 12 Monate fahren

IsarCard Jahreskarte - 9½ Monate im Voraus bezahlen, 12 Monate fahren

Whereas the 2nd option is obviously cheaper but u pay in advance, does the 1st option allow u the opportunity to stop payments at any time, ie if I am suddenly to move away?
gooner_gal
yep. you can stop payments at any time as far as i'm aware. you just need to send the tickets back that you haven't used
UrbanAngel
ok, thanks for the info!
gooner_gal
oops...sorry...edited my post to something completey different as I didn't read what you wrote properly! now nothing makes sense any longer! blink.gif
UrbanAngel

For the Yearly cards, Can you start any time, or does the year run from a specific date ?
gooner_gal
you can start from whenever you want. mine run out next month, so I must have seen the light in about June two years ago!

gooner_gal

That was NOT my experience. Monday, 8:15a.m., on my way to pick up a weekly card (back in 2000).

Cost me 30 marks (they halved the fine when I showed my previous weeklies).

Maybe it's changed; I don't know. I have an annual card. Ask at a kiosk to be sure.

woof.

ok. curiousity got the better of me so i looked up the current terms and conditions. It is definitely the case that the Isar card is valid until 12 on the following workday.

Nope, hasn't changed. They attacked on the S5 on April 1st ~8am. Three of the people around me tried (in this order) 1)didn't realize the month change (strafzettel 1), 2) it's good till 12, isn't it?(strafzettel 2) 3)oops. I'm on my way to puccistr anyway. (strafzettel 3)

So, that being said. It could be that it really IS good till 12, and they attack thinking people won't know that (in which case the 5 DB inspectors lied... they came out in force that day), or it isn't actually good until 12pm. Either way, since I've got a kundenkarte and usually buy the month cards, I usually just buy it at the machine.

I reckon the Monday to Sunday fixed Weekly ticket or the 1st to 30th (or 31st) Monthly ticket is a bit of a scam.

Should really be a week (or month) from the date you buy it - in fact the date of purchase is on a lot of tickets. Wonder how far you would get if you argued the point in court if you were fined after the ticket expired but less than a week after you bought it...
gooner_gal
in Berlin the monthly tickets are valid for a month after the date of purchase. So if you buy it on the 10th then it's valid for 30 days. Quite useful really...
Wibble
@gooner_gal

Not when you live in Munich.
gooner_gal
the idea, Wibble, is a good one. Was using Berlin as an example...
