Extra week of leave when having a second baby - Germany

If the first is pre-kindergarten age

don_riina
I've heard a rumour that if you have a second baby, whilst the first is still pre-kindergarten age, that you get an extra week of leave. Is this true? If it is, how does that work? I presume the employer should not be expected to pay that (or maybe they are, I dunno), so is it the state that pays? Are there forms for this?

Yes, I should go and speak to HR; but this is Germany, where the duties of HR and the damned betriebsrat things are split and grey, getting info from them can be like getting blood from a stone.

I just thought maybe the collective wisdom of TT might know a little something about this?

It isn't a legal requirement, but I wouldn't be surprised if public sector employees had something like this, which means a few other unions might have it as well. If you're covered by a Manteltarifvertrag, you could look it up there. If you're not, you may have to shake an answer out of your HR people after all.

If your first child is say 3 years old and your wife will be in hospital for the second one then your health insurnace pays you any loss of earnings for the time period she is in hospital.Allowing you to stay at home to look after the first child. You get a form fromyour health insurance and the wage ofice fills it out and then you hand it back to the health insurance
