They just moved my Post Office locally into the Lotto Totto shop. Fine with me 'cos one of the girls is kinda like Anastacia complete with the glasses. Last few weeks they have been in training and I am #1 guinea pig 'cos I'm always doing the "exciting" overseas packages.
Anyway I just go in and the supervisor is not there so Anastacia and her mate are flying solo for the first time.
I have my package all labelled up for the UK Airmail etc and after some faffing she says "12 Euros" and I say "Nope - try again - its a MaxiBrief etc etc".
This goes on a bit, looking stuff up on computers. Finally she rings the supervisor on the mobile after I point out the page in it that says "EUROPA up to 500grams 6 EUROS". Ahhhh says Anastacia
"that price is only for EUROPE and your package is to England which is not in Europe."
Needless to say after being informed by myself AND the supervisor that England is indeed in Europe it only cost me the 6 yo-yos.
(small aside is that the package was 3 DVD's from Beate Uhse for my brother's birthday for fun - so rather glad we did not have to reopen the package).

Had the same experience when they moved the post office to the local bakery. They weren't sure if Ireland was in Europe however they were quite happy to let a letter off to New York for the European rate for some reason.

Don't flatter yourself!
Yeah, I've had similar experiences with the Stadtsparkasse.
Well since england is in europe maybe she was just trying to get you to pay in some of your pound shaped euros.
No wonder people get confused, seems like the english themselves cant decide if they really want to be in europe or not. Bit of consistency people!

@grtho. Trust me - the contents of this package would in fact be pretty damn exciting on a widescreen projector.

Excellent. Now I have the Rugby World Cup AND cheaper postal rates to obscure Eastern European countries to look forward to in 2007.

this story reminded me of the
Taco Bell employees who refused $2 bills because they thought that no such bills existed...

Well, to be fair, I haven't seen a $2 bill in about 15 years. Last time was when I was working in a gas station, and some guy came in and paid for $10 worth of gas with five of them. It doesn't seem that strange for someone who's only about 20ish to have never heard of them.

I have 4 of them stuck to my refridgerator here. Not really worth converting to Euros. I thought they were supposed to be collector's items anyway? Kind of like the Susan B. Anthony dollar.

@ IPJ
I was just in Houston and saw a commercial (a VERY bad one at that) for a metal recycling place thay pays you in $2 bills. I can't believe the gimmick actually works (but then again, here I am telling you about their commercial...).

this is weird. I now remember that I had a dream the other night where there was a $3 bill in some change I received.

where is that nightmare thread...

$2 bills story. Someone who was angry at Best Buy decided to pay them with only 2$ bills. Best buy reported him to the police for counterfeiting. He gets arrested until they noticed that was real money. Could not find the news item.

Got change in domonican republic in March in $2 bills. Wondered "what the f***" but once you feel the paper it couldn't be anything other than real...
what do they use to make dollar bill paper - it feels like nothing else? Actually I noticed that it seemed to work like a sponge in high humidty, the dollars in the hotel safe just always seemed damp, but the euro notes next to them felt fine.
