University Student Visa not Currently Enrolled - Germany

How can I take a temporary job?

maryo72
Hello,

When I arrived in Berlin (spring 2009) I decided to take the University type Visa with the intention of enrolling in a Master's Program for the fall (2009). My circumstances prevented me from enrolling in the Fall semester and now I must wait to try to enroll in the spring semester (2010). I am currently enrolled at a language school but not a university. I have been offered a temporary job that is directly related to my school studies (I am a musician). This job, however, is not a freelance position or a "professional" position. It is just a regular employee job that would most likely run for a few months. It is EXTREMELY important to me that I take this job since it will be good for my resume and I have not worked in 6 months! Does anyone know if I could get a temporary work permit that would allow such a thing and that could easily be switched back to a student permit once I have confirmed my acceptance into the University? My visa currently says I may work "180 half days and 90 full days on holidays or semester break" but after I told the company I had permission to work I realized that it probably doesn't apply to me since I am not currently enrolled at a University.

Any information is greatly appreciated!!! I need to resolve this issue ASAP.

Thanks so much!!!

Getting a working holiday visa?

I am afraid the "working holiday" visa is not available to US citizens.

Your primary problem here is that you have to get a visa to work this job, and it doesn't sound like it's one where there is no non-EU/non-Niederlassungerlaubnis holder available to do it. If that's the case, your prospective employer's application for a visa for you will be rejected (and that's assuming that they would be willing to go to the trouble of applying for you).

If you are concerned about gaps on your resume and don't have a crying financial need to work, try to volunteer (which also has the benefit of helping to improve your German).
