Foreign films in English - Berlin

Where to find

roundoff
Hi! I have been lurking here for a while... I've recently moved to Berlin and wondering if there are cinemas that show "foreign films" with english subtitles in berlin. i know that there are cinemas that show english movies in orginal language, but i also want to watch non-english movies...

Already been asked, and not-answered, i am afraid! Perhaps you will get a better response..
Kanadisch
From my looking around (which I cannot promise is comprehensive) it doesn't seem like there is much of that in the city. Most foreign films in Berlin are OmU, which makes sense. I suppose you could look around on Zitty for OmE but really I think you're not likely to find much.

But I'm open to being proved wrong.

I believe only the Berlinale is showing movies like this...
Good reason to practise some German

Or check out stressfaktor as a lot of the project houses have free kino nights and show a lot of foreign films

Tip publishes a list of movies which are OmU/OV, and sometimes they also have movies listed as "OmEngU" (Original Version with English Subtitles). I have seen some at Babylon Mitte. But then again, yes, it is something quite rare (and it makes sense, I'm afraid; I would imagine that the number of people willing to watch some obscure Hungarian film, and understanding neither Hungarian nor enough German for the subtitles, is too small to make a commercial enterprise out of it).

When I was last in Berlin I went to the Odeon Schöneberg and I saw a German film with English subtitles. I don't know if this was a one off though. I know they show mostly original films with subtitles in either English or German.

I am going off on a bit of a tangent here but, I have read the topics on receiving English TV here via satellite on the Toytown pages and have tried following them up.
I have just been to www.onastra.com to see what is available and basically it is sod-all.
Hundreds of channels, but virtually none of them English, apart from news channels.
Can any of you folks out there shed some light on the subject.
Can we get BBC, ITV etc in Berlin.
If you can help I would be so grateful.

I'm a film addict so consider myself fairly qualified to answer. I have Spanish under my belt as well, so that meant at least a 2nd language was accessible, but still I chafed at my linguistic limitations. I have found that the Central in Hackescher Markt was the theater that made the most effort to reach out to the German-challenged crowd with English subtitling, although that's mainly with German-language films. Also, the theater is in fairly poor condition and small. Still they have a buy 5/get 1 free card and a free night that makes it more economical. Other than the Berlinale, there are occasionally smaller film festivals from fairly obscure areas (particularly small Eastern European countries) where the producers clearly don't have budgets for multiple language subtitling, meaning they're done in English. For example, if I remember correctly, there was a Polish film fest in the Deutsches Historisches Museum last spring with at least have subtitled in English. Using the Zitty Kino search is the most comprehensive way to stay on top of these things; I second that recommendation.

Yes you can get some. The satellite threads on Toytown are clear on that. With a normal dish pointed at the Uk satellites and a British Sky box with a C4/C5 card (get via Ebay) you can get C5, Five live Fiver and a load of free channels, plus ITV on the special manual channel. If you want C4 BBC etc you need a 2 metre dish or bigger in Berlin.

I gave up on British TV apart from kid's TV for my child on Saturday mornings.
