think it is still open, just very heavily policed.

What news? You just can't drive on the streets next to it unless you live there

landwehrstrasse is now blocked at the Paul-Heyse-Strasse end, wasn't before monday

I live on the edge of the Theresienwise, they started deploying roadblocks and vast numbers of police on the periphery and closing all the roads in the wee small hours of Monday morning. Certainly it was all in place at 6am when I cycled to the gymn. Most roads are closed and the few that are open, such as Martin Greif Strasse are patrolled with all vehicles being stopped and questioned or searched before they are allowed in.

TBH, I don't think they would bother with that level of security if the Wiesn was called off.

I would imagine that being seen to act to prevent a terrorist attack on the world's biggest bier festival is probably one of the most impossible briefs a police chief could ever have.

offtopic: going to the gym at 6 am, I am impressed.

It's because pictures of the Wies'n appeared in a terrorist video, details (in German) here

I feel like I'm back at Belfast Fairly impressive for german standards.

there is a map on this page that shows the "Sperrgürtel" round the Wiesn and the position of all roadblocks

I may be wrong on this but I don't think any attack on the Oktoberfest would happen.

The attacks on the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon were very carefully chosen targets. They were the heart of the military industrial complex. I really somehow think this is a little jittery nerves, but I hope to god I am right.

However one should be a little cautious, yet not too much. We're not in the stages of checking under cars for bombs yet.

I hope you are right as well, but it's not like they are against hitting tourist centres - see Bali bombings for instance?

@jeremy Huh? WTC and Pentagon might have been well chosen targets but Al Qeada is a loose connection of cells and they aren't above attacking soft targets as well. What about Bali or the underground and bus in London? Hardly military or industrial complex targets where they?
But if they wanted to attack the Oktoberfest they would only have to take the public transport or cycle in. This stopping all the traffic is just making life difficult for us that live nearby.

The only way to stop Muslim terrorists blowing up targets in the west is for us to stop blowing up targets in the east. It's as simple as that. Even with all the security, I find it hard to believe that someone couldn't bypass it if they wanted to. The best it can do is deter a would be terrorist somewhat.
Johnny English
Regretfully, it is a pretty soft target.

Bali - nightclub
Spain - commuter trains
France - Paris Metro
UK- buses and underground trains

The threat was real but in the spirit of this kind of terrorism there may or may not be any bombs. Only hindsight can tell. In the meantime who can blame the German state from wanting to protect its citizens?
