It's apple season. That means the apple man is at the weekly market selling fresh apple juice, which explodes after about a week if you don't drink it in time. It's wonderful.

The big one available right now is pumpkin, which you should simply chop up its inside, then chop up two leeks, fry them and add a kettle of boiling water, then either two teaspoons of "Gemüsebrühe" or a half litre or so of home made chicken stock.

Not one of the above, but there are loads of chestnuts falling out of the trees now. I filled my husband's sweatshirt hood while we were walking through the woods on Sunday (about 1.5 kilos, whew!). They are delicious! I'm roasting a pan full at the moment.
Don't mistake chestnuts for horse chestnuts, which are not edible as far as I've heard, however. They have different looking capsules.

Not as good as in the spring, but radishes, feld salat, rucula, spinach and such are back with this kind of weather. Not likely to get fresh homegrown in the local store, but roadside stands might have them. Also its time for cabbage and tubars.

I so meant to start this topic a while back.
There are some lovely pears out now. (Please ignore spelling) Gute Luis has an amazing citrus-esque flavour, and another one (Alexander something perhaps??) is really big, crunchy and juicy, butter birne was fairly standard; soft and juicy and tastes like pear. Apples are good too. Got a load of boskop cooked down in the freezer and braeburn for eating now. Plus several kilos of plums (zwetschgen) halved and frozen.
Have just seen some lovely looking (haven't tried them yet) cep mushroom (steinpilz is it?) just when the chantrelle are coming to an end.
It is a slightly sad time though, I think, because all the winter stuff is coming through - Brussels sprouts, cabbages, pumpkin, Jerusalem artichoke, lambs lettuce - and while I like all those veggies, you're well aware that the warm weather is coming to an end.

All the tree fruits like apples, pears, quince.
Root veg like potato, carrot, rutabega, turnips, parsnips
Cruciferous veg like broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts.
Mushrooms of all sorts
Corn of course. (when will they start growing white sweet corn over here in Germany??) And when will they start selling it without it being husked already?
Have been seeing a lot of berries too, like blueberries, blackberries, raspberries
The squash family, pumpkins, and zucchini. If you can find giant zucchini, you can make great zucchini bread.

There's a nice website that can tell you what's in season currently and will even send you an email about it, with links to info about some of the produce and also recipes. It's UK/Ireland based (or US/Canada if you set it for that) but in general will work for German seasonal produce too.

Berries are over by like a month. The height of their season is mid July to the beginning of August. Just cause you see them in the stores doesn't mean they are in season. As for the blackberries, €5 for a frigging handful is highway robbery!

Another quick question, would that mean that fruits like strawberries & cherries (which are not in season yet still available) have more pesticides now???
