In a 2003 interview,[32] Samantha Geimer said, "Straight up, what he did to me was wrong. But I wish he would return to America so the whole ordeal can be put to rest for both of us." Furthermore, "I'm sure if he could go back, he wouldn't do it again. He made a terrible mistake but he's paid for it".
In 2008, Geimer stated in an interview that she wishes Polanski would be forgiven, "I think he's sorry, I think he knows it was wrong. I don't think he's a danger to society. I don't think he needs to be locked up forever and no one has ever come out ever - besides me - and accused him of anything. It was 30 years ago now. It's an unpleasant memory ... (but) I can live with it."[33]

Ok the guy is guilty. He admitted it. Even if the victim forgives him, there is still a price to be paid. He fled justice. Sooner or later, Justice will catch up. That time has come, and it is his time to go to jail. The French be damned.

I agree he should have a consequence for the crime with some additional punishment for fleeing.
This is what I'm not getting, how do you allow a man who's a fugitive from justice for raping a child to make money in the U.S. from the sell of his movies and then award him an Oscar?
Is it because people of influence and wealth are not held to the same scrutinity and standards?

...And justice for all
However, if he hadn't escaped then (in 1978) , there wouldn't have been such great films as:
Pirates (1986), Bitter Moon (1992), The Ninth Gate (1999), The Pianist (2002) and Oliver Twist (2005)

Who knows what masterworks of art we are preventing by putting people in jail at all.
I propose we deport all our criminals to France. Problem solved here, and they can make movies and eat baguette over there.

After all many of the criminals in the U.S. who are incarcerated have high I.Q.s and it would be a terrible pity if society is deprived of their cultural contribution just because they committed a crime. So open the gates and let them out now! Fuck sending them to France send them to Bidul's house to watch Polanski movies and dinner.

"Hannibal the Cannibal" also has a high IQ...want to go to dinner with him?

Polanski should just do the time and get it over with. He's going to be able to bargain his time down to probably a couple of years. He should just pay his debt to society and have done with it. It would probably rehabilitate his reputation if he admits not only that he was guilty, but that he was wrong, and is willing to make amends by doing his time.

You don't get my facetiousness. My point is just because Roman Polanski is a brilliant filmmaker doesn't mean he should get off any easier because of his talents. He should be punished, just like any one else would be.
Furthermore, I do think because people have fame and fortune sometimes they get off easier or it's hard for people to believe they are capable of doing such a crime.

Polanski himself was a victim of a much more serious crime by having his wife and his unborn child slain by the Manson gang. I don't see what sort of purpose is being served by locking him up 30 years after that crime.

Oblomov, two wrongs don't make a right. You get a free pass in life because you have suffered? Sorry, giving a kid a qualude and anally raping her when she is begging you not to do it is causing great suffering to that person--for life. You can't take back that sort of violation to the psyche. He should have taken responsibility for his own craziness, rather than passing pain along. So now, he should pay the piper. It won't be long, but he should give up his villa, and the nice life with wife and kiddies, and think about what he's done.

@Oblomov
They are two different crimes. Are you saying that if someone does something bad to me, I have the right to do something bad to someone else?
I don't think so.

funf, I mentioned his wife´s death as a lot of comments here seem to imply that everything was luxury and plain sailing for him in life. The victim of Polanski´s crime herself doesn´t seem to be too keen to have him punished. Obviously, with the Yanks getting hysterical about anything sexual I had to be prepared to get negative comments for any post that isn´t in favour of coming down on Polanski like a ton of bricks.
