I will be in Hamburg on 1st of October, 2009 from India. I have been offered accommodation in the two quarters of hamburg-mitte which are Wilhelm burg and Hamm-Mitte, from which I have to select one. I want to know the answers of the following questions;
1 I want to select one of the quarters of Hamburg-Mitte from Wilhelm burg and Hamm-Mitte, which is very near to Berlinertor and public transport. Please advice me which one of the quarters I should select. How much time it can take to reach berlinertor if I travel from either Wilhelm burg or Ham-mitte?
2 I want to know more about Public transport in Hamburg. Whether I can travel through any public transport by using semester ticket (WHICH PROVIDE CHEAP TRAVEL FOR STUDENTS)?
3.I also want to know whether I can find the public transport easily or I have to walk a lot in order to find one or it depend where you live in Hamburg.
I am very scared because I will be first time in a foreign country with basic knowledge of German. Please give the answers of these questions written above and good advice to make my life easy when I will be in Hamburg.
Thank You

I'm new to Hamburg, but most everywhere here is safe and has good public transport links, all you will need is a street map with an overlay of the transport network (you can pick one up here for a few euros) ... even with a basic (mine is almost non-existent) knowledge of German, in Hamburg you will find your way, also - there are a few great indian People on here - we met with them last night and they manage without speaking much German.
I know I haven't answered your questions, I just hope it helps

Hi Kim Johnson!
You may want to take the following into consideration:
1. Wilhelmsburg is quite a large district. There is a suburban railway (S-Bahn) running through, with 2 stations (Wilhelmsburg and Veddel). There are quite different quarters in Wilhelmsburg, so a general answer to public transport would depend on the adress. The S-Bahn from Wilhelmsburg does not run directly to Berliner Tor. You would have to get off at Hammerbrook and take a 5-10 Minutes walk through an office-district or change trains at Hauptbahnhof and go 1 station to Berliner Tor proper.
2. Hamm-Mitte is quite close to Berliner Tor. Depending on where you are, there is either an Underground (U-Bahn) or (probably) a bus to Berliner Tor (5-10 minutes journey)
3. If you are a student, the Semesterticket will give you access to all public transport (S-Bahn, U-Bahn and Bus, even certain harbour-ferries). Public transport in Hamburg is mostly comfortable and safe. Personally I might have some apprehensions against travelling to Wilhelmsburg very late at night, but this may be a prejudice.
4. Hamburg is a relatively safe place, compared with most large cities, if you avoid red-light districts like Reeperbahn or the murkier back-roads between Berliner Tor and Hauptbahnhof.
Wilhelmsburg is quite multicultural with a large Turkish population.
If you tell me the streets that are offered to you, I can tell you more.
Enjoy your stay in Hamburg

3. Generally excellent advice from Chris (I lived in HH for many years), would however stress that he is not predjudiced, anyone should be concerned about travelling to Wilhelmsburg very late at night. Not nice.

Wilhelmsburg is a dump, avoid it if at all possible.

Well, not really a dump, or probably not all of Wilhelmsburg. I lived there a couple of years ago and there were quite nice places. But Wilhelmsburg station is probably in the not-so-nice part and I never used public transport at night when I lived there.
OK, to state it clearly:
I would prefer Hamm-Mitte! Better transport to Berliner Tor, safer at night, close to the city, almost certainly better housing-standard. Underground stations Hammer Kirche, Rauhes Haus and Burgstraße are all on the U2-line that stops at Berliner Tor and a bus that stops between the U-bahn stations.

The neighbourhood in Hamm-Mitte is relatively safer than Wilhemsburg, that's something you need to consider!

I am sorry for replying late .I am extremely grateful to all of you guys especially Chris for their splendid advice. I decided to choose Hamm-Mitte as my place of resident when I will be in Hamburg after considering the excellent advice of all the guys who responded to my query . According to my friend who has arranged accommodation for me told me that at Hamm-Mitte I will be living around the area of Eiffestraße. Can anyone please let me know that whether it will be easy for me to find the public transport from the area of Eiffestraße and how much time it would take to reach berlinertor from Eiffestraße? . I again express my thanks to all of you for your kindness and favor.
Thank you

The Underground stations are along a road (Hammer Landstr.) running parallel to Eiffestr. You will probably be living between these two roads. Underground is easy to find. It will be 10 minutes walk at the most and 5-8 minutes on the train to Berliner Tor, depending on which of the three stations you chose. Get a map of Hamburg with the public transport lines in it. Or check out www.hvv.de then choose the rider "Streckennetz", choose "Verkehrsnetz", type in Eiffestr. and choose the option Straße/Hausnr., click "In Karte anzeigen" and you will see Eiffestraße, the U-bahn and Berliner Tor on the left hand edge of the plan.
Relax!
Hamburg is cool.
