Things I ate at the Oktoberfest

I went strolling over the grounds a few times and was impressed by the variety of foods offered. While the scope remains more or less German (I think that I found chili con carne as well) you can still choose from fish, vegetarian, dairy, fowl and meat. So what did you eat this year?

Käfer: duck with rösti, applesauce and red cabbage; Zwetschgendatschi
Kalb-Küche: Ox steak in a roll (very juicy and tasty)
Kartoffelhaus: Potato patties with creamed cheese and spring onions

Add three Maß, one glass of prosecco and two Weißbier spread over three visits.

The filet at the Ochsenbraterei is on our list of once-a-year must-haves. The Ochsensemmel there we might have more than once, and we generally make guests get it because we've not seen it anywhere else -- suggestions welcome!

I absolutely must have the Ochsenbraten at Ochsenbraterei once every year. I don't know what they put in the sauce but it is delicious and the meat is perfect. Every time we discuss going to another tent, someone always says, yeah..but the ox...

The other tradition - a package of roasted, sugary and spicy almonds on the way out of the gates at night.

I gave in and had a roast chicken at Schottenhamel today - deliciously seasoned and very juicy.

Love Fischer Vroni. I ate there twice last week and have tried all 4 of the steckerlfisch.
Maybe a little expensive, but fed 4 people for just under 40EUR is not bad for a great meal.

we had the group Schmankerlplatte at the Hippodrom yesterday. big board full of Obatzda, radishes, Schnittlauchbrot, Schmalzbrot and Brezens! really yummy

In addition to its double entendre value, I'd recommend the spicy ox sausage! Kinda like that spicy French beef sausage (whose name I forget).

Ammer: Apple beignets liberally sprinkled with cinnamon-sugar and whipped cream
Kalb-Küche again: Kalbspflanzerl a good inch thick, in a roll, beautifully cooked and seasoned, with a dab of carrot/coleslaw salad, a slice of tomato and a lettuce leaf

Armbrustschützenzelt: Spanferkel vom Spieß (spit-roasted suckling pig) with a Kartoffelknödel (potato dumpling); tender, juicy meat, excellent crackling, the Knödel was an absolute dream of softness and flavor; but there were two drawbacks: the knife wasn't half sharp enough to cut through the meat and there was just too damn much of it! If you go for this next year, one helping easily feeds two as it comes with a generous mound of Krautsalat (shredded white cabbage salad) as well.
