Cheapest way to get from Berlin to Vienna

Tips and recommendations

Basically would be leaving Berlin around Oct. 30th (dates are +/-1 or 2 days flexible) and headed to Vienna.

I found a price of 78 Euro for 2 adults on http://www.bahn.de/international/view/en/index.shtml

but is there anything that might be cheaper out there that I have not run into yet?

If not another travel option would it be cheaper if we stopped in Prague for a couple nights and then purchased tickets from there to Vienna???

thanks everyone

If you don't mind cramming into a stranger's car, then Mitfahrgelegenheit is an option; otherwise train tickets might be cheaper on the Czech Railways website. Although €39 to travel 750km on comfortable trains is such an unbelievable bargain that I'm not sure why you haven't already snapped up the tickets.

It would NOT lower the price to stop over in Prague.
What STB said, get that offer!

wow, €39 is a super price - don't think you would get a better bargain myself.

Thats bloody Cheap you couldnt get a Taxi into town for that price

Well, as the famous saying goes: You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it get out its credit card instead of starting a new forum thread.

Air Berlin flights start at 21 euros.

Plus a €3 tax, €20 fuel surcharge, €10 surcharge, and trains to and from the airport at both ends. The cheapest flight on or around October 30 is €54, plus transport to and from the airports. And you'd have to be at the airport by 5am.

I wish you'd done your homework properly before posting.

I dont think a Mietfahrgelegenheit for Berlin-Wien (760 km) would be anyway cheaper than 39 EUR. Normal preis on Mietfahrgelegenheit is 5 EUR pro 100 km pro person, meaning exactly 38 EUR for the ride
As everyone already mentioned, this is a very good offer from Bahn, and I dont think there are many cheaper options

€20 fuel surcharge
Fuel was all time low just some months back, still Airlines were and are charging fuel surcharge. I checked for a Frankfurt-Nice flight last April (fuel was all time low back then I guess), and Lufthansa was still charging some 30 EUR fuel surcharge.
Any ideas why? Did all of them hedged on fuel, and now over paying?
Small Town Boy
Fuel, like all other costs incurred by airlines, should be included in the ticket price. The "fuel surcharge" is a scam to keep the headline rate low, a trick that even after several years obviously still works on some people.

Referring back to the original question, although I relish the idea of a long train ride in order to relax and read, the night train would be a more time-efficient option and save a night's accommodation costs as well. There is a direct service arriving at 6.30am, but if you want to arrive later then there are connections to other night trains arriving around 8.30am.

Thanks for all the replies.

Just to mention: I did do tons of research before posting this thread. I was only asking for others advice and input on possibilities (ex. the hitchhiking site, and stop overs) that I might have missed that would make this any cheaper.

Thanks again!

the hitchhiking site, that I might have missed that would make this any cheaper.
I knew some Polish friends of mine(really beautiful ones, both of them) who sometimes used hitchhiking on their way back home (but not so long distance, only 100km from Dresden),and ofcourse you need to have very nice legs then ... Would be quite difficult to find one going 750kms, and wanting to give a free ride for 2.
Anyway, is hitchhiking popular in Germany? I never found any good site on hitchhiking, anyone has ideas on how to do it here?
Small Town Boy
You stand at an obvious location and put your thumb out. I saw a hitchhiker today, the first in years.
