Live in Uhlenhorst or Neustadt? - Hamburg

Hi!
I am moving to Hamburg already this weekend for a month, and I have contacted an agency that has come up with one apartment in Uhlenhorst (Kanal) and one in Neustadt next to St. Michaelis kirche. Which area would you prefer? I am looking for a nice and safe area where I can walk at night, go to the gym and have some shops nearby to buy the essentials. I am going to work in the ABC Strasse. Hope you could give me some advise!

PS: I am from Norway and have never been to Hamburg

My personal preference would be Uhlenhorst as it's the better area; however, the downside would be the lack of u-bahn or s-bahn coverage in the area.

Around the St Michaelis church is really OK as well, it's safe and you are very central for shops, restaurants and bars etc. It depends what you want out of an area.

Hamburg is a relatively safe city anyway so don't worry too much about that.

Are there busses covering this area? At what time at night do they stop going in Hamburg?

The bus coverage is very good for Uhlenhorst with direct services to the centre and connections to the u-bahn - check the timetables out on the HVV website http://www.hvv.de/en/

Just to add, near to the St Michaelis church there are two good gyms: Meridian Spa and Fitness First.

Yes ABC Strasse is around 1km from the St Michaelis church, so it's purely personal preference for the OP, whether they wish to live conveniently right in the city centre or not, or prefer to live somewhere a little quieter.

Ideally you should really give yourself a chance to see both flats and areas first, and get a feeling for which one to choose.

Unfortunately I will not be able to see the areas before i go. I think Uhlenhorst seems nicer and more like a place I would like to stay if as was moving there for a longer time. Neustadt seems somewhat "greyer", but it is closer and the rent is cheaper, so I am leaning towards this option.

...If only here for a month I'd live closer to work that further away.....it's 10 mins by foot to everywhere from Neustadt....City Center, Reeperbahn, Harbour, Speicherstadt & FINNEGANS!!!....WELCOME to HH

If it is just for a month I would prefer Neustadt. If you want to settle down and raise children, Uhlenhorst might be the better option.
Neustadt offers shops, pubs, the harbour, a market (Großneumarkt), is close to your place of work and there are still some quiet places to live.
Where exactly in Neustadt is the flat?

Hi! Thank you for your advice. I do not have the adress, but the agency gave me a general idea, so if the area was unsafe I would not have moved there.

Uhlenhorst is really not that far from the center. The 6 bus is very convenient.
And if you rent or borrow a bike, even better.
