Shops in Regensburg

For food & kitchen stuff

ferriswheeljunky
Hi,
I'm spending this year in Regensburg as an exchange student at the university, and I'll be arriving in a couple of weeks' time on a Saturday. One of my main priorities when I get there is to stock up on food and kitchen utensils (plates, saucepans etc). Can anyone recommend any good supermarkets and department stores where I could find that kind of thing? (I'm staying in the Altstadt until I get my uni accommodation, so preferably near there if possible.) Also, are most big shops likely to be open on Saturday afternoons?
Thanks for your help!
Oh, and an afterthought: are there any UK foods that it's really difficult to find a decent German equivalent for, that I should try bringing over with me? Curry paste, digestive biscuits etc?

Well you can find kitchen supplies as well as supermarketsa in the aldtstadt but expect to pay a bigger price. The cheapest supermarket(with quality food) is in the Arcaden next to the bahnhof. It has the largest selection of food , in the aldtstast including decent 9month chedder, as well as a limited selection of serving ware. Now if you are attending the university you can take , or walk, to Lidyl or Aldi and they have cheaper food as well as again a limited selection serving ware. Just take the #11 south and it should be a 5 minute ride from the university and about a 12 minute ride fom the aldtstadt. I recommend buying bulk tickets at the radthause because they are cheaper there. If you have anymore question feels free to PM me.

Oh also Murphys law show all football, cricket, and rugby action. It is also in the aldtstadt and is a great place to practice your german. 90% of the custmers are german as well as staff so they love to speak german there. You will also find tandem partners very easily there if you wish to speak german and they wish to speak english. Also every other monday night is pub quiz night which is in german and english so feel free to drop in.

cheers and welcome to MY town. hee hee

Hi Perdido,

Can you recommend a good supermarket in Regensburg? I found the ones we go to, have very poor variety. We shop usually at Edeka (Köwe-center) and city, sometimes also at Real (close or in Pentling). Are there any bigger and good supermarkets located of course in Regensburg? oh we tried Bio-Markt close to the city as well...
By the way thanks so much for all info. you always providing.

Cheers

Well Real is the one big market while Edeka the main market in the Aldtstadt and yes it is a rip off. The Netto located at Arnuflzplat is okay but very limited selection and very limited quality. Komland at the arcaden is not bad but lately I have been buying more and more of my stuff at Metro(bus number 11 south). best over all selection for all food products . In fact if you are craving seafoodthen this is the place to go. Now you will need a card to buy there but you can always find expats that have one.

Sorry but what do you mean by a card? this card is specific for this supermarket?

oops sorry I meant a membership card. Its like Sams or Costco in the U.S. I guess like bulk items but not really. I have one due to my wife being a part owner of a business and me being free lance. There are two price scales on products depending if you fit under "tax free" status and those that do not. Since we do not resell we fall under a slighter higher price range but cheaper than Edeka or Real prices. So that plus the selection it is well worth it. If you are here under contract with some company see if they can get you the card.

Word to the wise if you do get in make sure you get there before 5pm because it gets packed after 5 until it closes. Oh also tons of free samples there. I got two liters of Regensburg beer free last I was shopping around. Although they would not let me drink while shopping. Shame really because when I drink I buy a lot more.

Thanks for the info. So what should I ask my employer, whether they have a Metro card?
Sounds like a good deal. Ahh yes I completely agree, if they allow you to drink, the shopping figures would definitely increase. Few months ago they tried this in Melbourne, they were giving free Sparkling wine esp. targeting the male gender (so they would not annoy their female partners while shopping) and installing video games in specific areas in a shopping centre and guess what, it worked! shopping figures increased dramatically.

the grocery store perdido mentioned in the second post is my favorite. It's called Kaufland. It's also located in the "Alexcenter" - not as central though.
If anybody needs a new set (and maybe not as high quality)of dishes or pots and pans I would recommand IKEA. You can reach it easily by bus (about a 15-20 min ride), and they have pretty good deals on so called "Starter Package" (or something similiar). On the website of IKEA you should also be able to check which bus to take.
