German banks for when your salary is paid in US$

Recommendations and advice on who to bank with

ashenputtel
hi all, one more question for you, I am moving to Nuremberg area for work, but my salary is paid in dollar. Does anyone recommend any reasonable german bank that would accept the direct deposit, convert the currency to Euro for hopefully not a lot of money, and still be accessible in many different branches/cities? thanks

If you find one, please let me know.

And, are you sure your company will do direct deposit overseas? I think there are electronic banking transfer laws or at least some cost to your employer, from what I've been told vaguely (not an expert here). My company won't do direct deposit to a foreign bank. I have a "bank-by-mail" account in the U.S. and my clients send checks there. I then have a monthly auto transfer of funds from there to here, cost about $40 a month.

Hey there,

Changing the subject slightly here but my salary is paid in euro. Currently banking with Postbank as they used to have "no bank fees" account. Over the past year they introduced a 5euro per month fee if you do not earn more than 2000euro per month. I do not earn that much and would like to find another bank which has cheaper/no bank fees. Any suggestions?

5 Euros?..yikes. How rude of them. I'm with a regular Sparkasse and I pay 3.68 Euros per month.

My sister just switched banks and if i am not mistaken, her bank is not charging (reason why she changed!). Let me ask her the name of it. I only remember it starting with the letter "O" but cannot recall the whole name of it.

I am seeing her Friday, so i can tell you then what the name of the bank is if you want to check it out.

Dresdner Bank used to have dollar-denominated accounts, so you might inquire there.

In my 3 years of living here, I have never found a better (easier) system than just keeping a US bank account for direct deposit of my USD salary. When I need to transfer funds, I would write a check (in USD) payable to myself and deposit it directly into my German account. In using this method, I would only loose a few % on the exchange rate and it would take a few weeks to process.

Also with this bank (Sparda-bank), I have never been charged any monthly "fees". Even despite never having any of my salary directly deposited with them, and while often maintaining a low balance, sometimes as little as 200€.

I also bank with Spardabank. i used to go to the one in Schweinfurt when I lived there but now I go to Bayreuth because I live in Graf. Sparda charges no fees that I know of and they have great customer service. I even financed my house through them and they had no problems with the fact that I get paid in dollars. That being said my check goes to a stateside bank and when I need to transfer money I just deposit a check to myself and the bank does not charge me a fee.
