Recommendations for visiting football fans

Out of the way non expat bars....

Cobb
Hi, sorry to invade your chatroom.

I am one of the thousands of Chelsea fans that will descend upon your city(sorry for some of their behaviour in advance)
There are about 20 of us in a mixed sex group, and we are well behaved, mostly.
Can you recommend a/some good bar/restaurants, that may be hidden away in some secret corner of the city?
We shall not be frequenting the Irish and English establishments, thank you.
In Barcelona we found an underground cavern type bar/resaurant, which was hidden away down a small narrow back street, but was quite central in the city and was quite wonderful, similar places would be appreciated.
I have had a good look around the site and found a few places to maybe look out for, but there's nothing like a personal touch. smile.gif

Thank you in advance.
benpanter
Cobb, for traditional bierkellar try Unionsbrau - Max-Weber-Platz. Gets busy and you should probably speak at least a bit of German.

Details somewhere here... search for unionsbrau
gideon
what exactly are you looking for? barvarian food? a real munich night?

EDIT: benpanther good choice!!
Sin
Try small-ish bars in Schwabing, like Alte Simpl. If not, try the Tex-American place Twisted Bavarian, it's kind of central, but out of the way at the same time. No trouble mind, and book in advanced for 20-ish. It's good for a mixed sex crowd. Definately avoid the Irish pubs. Not sure there are any English pubs left. Don't go to the biergartens because they will be stuffed with Bayern München fans from all over Hannover, Etc.

Oh! and while yer at it...

...can you put a few past Routemaster-Rear faced Kahn?
benpanter
Yeup, the microbrewery beer is good (even though it's owned by Lowenbrau!) and the traditional food is good value. Esp. the ribs.
JoolyBooly
UnionsBräu is fab, if a little quiet. Downstairs is more lively I guess, and with 20 people the tables are big.

If not maybe Augustiner brewery near the main station, they have a beer garden and a lovely cellar (hidden away). Or the other side of the S-Bahn tracks (near the Oktoberfest field) is the main brewery restaurant, typically bavarian and great value.

Or Juleps / Bar Lissabon right next to the East Station, Juleps speak english and the food is fab, all candle-lit too and they have a happy hour.
gideon
sin, alte simpl is good but with 20 peeps it could be a problem to get enough space.
what about the Paulaner near the arbeitsamt or the augustiner in the brewery itsself where you can see the horses...?

oh and dont worry about chelsea fans, you'll be surrounded by barvarian police... you stand a snowballs chance in hell of farting in the wrong direction let alone starting a fight!

i'd stay clear of any big beer hall aswell as the biergardens, unless you go to a smaller one such as thurn und thaxis maybe.
Owain Glyndwr
Irish Bar - Güther Murphy's on the Nikolaistrasse

Traditonal - UnionsBräu, near Max-Weber-Platz

Touristy - Hofbräuhaus

Bavarian but in the centre of town - Weißes Bräuhaus, am Tal.

Biergarten - take your pick from Augustinerkellner (not far from Hauptbahnhof), Seehaus, Chinese Tower, Hirschau (all in the English Gardens), Taxisgarten in Nymphenburg, Hirschgarten etc etc etc.
Cobb
The food isn't so important, although a meal or even a snack, to soak up the beer is cool.
Saying that, 3 days to explore means it's nice to have at least one decent meal with wine.
Tuesday will be beer and footy day in a decent bar with maybe cocktails, Wednesday will be the day for a meal and a good night out, Thursday we will be visiting Dacau, I think.

We just hate the Irish/English themed bars, they will be full to the rafters with supporters anyway.

I suppose it is a bit vague!
butterbean
the last time we were at Unionsbrau, I got mild food poisoning from the ribs (no, was not drunk enough for it to be the beer). Still, wouldn't rule them out. Our waitress spoke great English too.

Love the Augustiner on Landsbergerstrasse!
grtho
Augustiner on Wörthstrasse near Ostbahnhof?
Showem
Sendlinger Augustiner on Alramstr. Out of the way, local, good food. Might even be able to put the game on for you on big screen if you ask nicely.
mightypies
Zoozie's would be a decent place to grab a few drinks in a nice enough german atmosphere. Been there a handful of times, but each time was a little warm and bubbly before getting there, so I'm a little hazy for directions.

Sausalito's on Türkenstrasse is also not bad - cocktails are nice, and the opposite sex there are just as good.

Otherwise, Eat the Rich (Schwabing somewhere I think - see reason why I can't remember how to get to Zoozies) is a small, yet real 'good time' place. Top crowd there too, plus you get half litre cocktails.

not terribly cheap at these places, but not touristy places.

You a Sendlinger showem? That's where I went to wet me baby's head. Missus used to live in Valleystr.
Showem
Sin, no, I'm in Maxvorstadt now. But I've lived twice nearby. I have fond memories of watching the World Cup in 1998 there. Had my birthday there once, I like the place and I think it's better than most of the places mentioned so far. (totally my opinion, nothing wrong with most already mentioned, just not where I would recommend)
gideon
whats the place near poccistrasse.. next to the KVA? where all the 1860 fans go to watch the football, that'll be a fun place for a chelski fan

i bet they are going to the game, even the augustiner is not good enough to stop them going to the match!

seriously that place is a bit out of the way, probably best to look at schwabing-ish places, TB, wassermann on herzogstr, etc.

not sure why they wish to avoid irish/english places - but if they want to avoid trouble, definitely worth steering clear. the beer gardens will not be a huge problem as the germans will be supremely confident before the game!

Latecomer, it says in the subtitle "out of the way non expat bars..."

Sendlinger Augustiner is off the beaten track, but you hardly have to travel miles out of your way, it's 6 minutes from Marienplatz on the U-Bahn with a 5 minute walk after.

I'd avoid English/Irish places too if I was visiting. If they wanted that, they could stay home!

As I said earlier, they will be stuffed to the rafters mate, hard to get served and not really what we are looking for.
Yes we are going to the game

That was amended by your moderator, I'd forgotten to put a title for my thread. =/

Before I came on the forum I had the following bars/restaurants down to explore:

Master's Home
Schumann's Bar
Radsteg
Hackershaus
Ratskeller(possibly not)
and an Indian for some of us...The New Dehli

Are any of these worth the visit,
Cheers

plenty of bars in munich, that is one thing you will not go short of.

augustiner brewery on landsberger strasse is class. if it is nice weather get to augustiner beer garden on arnulfstrasse.

ideally you want something on the U3 underground line, as that goes to the stadium, but there will be special trains on the U2 line too, which runs through the main train station. a few ideas:

zum brezen on leopoldstr
wasserman is near hohenzollernplatz u-bahn
TB is near josephsplatz (these are both on the U2)
the bunter vogel is decent enuf near Münchner Freiheit (U3)
good number of places in town near Marienplatz (U3)

even the sendlinger augustiner is on the U3, but a long way from the stadium, if you are pinting before the game.
mightypies
schumanns is a bit pretentious, i found.

either the place to have a nice quiet martini, or a perfect place to take the missus
Topsy
Sendlinger Augustiner is v. good (also have fond memories of watching the '98 world cup in there smile.gif)
Also the Augustiner place that grtho mentioned near Ostbahnhof.
Or somewhere like Sappralot in Neuhausen (although I think that might be an FCB bar, not sure)
Topsy
Cobb, all the bars you mention in post 22 ('cept Radsteg, don't know it) are a bit too posh for my liking.
Although if you are a Chelsea fan maybe they would be right up your street wink.gif
Cobb
Lol...posh we ain't, well I speak for myself there really.

Thanks for the replies tho, quality.

Could you give me the address of Julleps/Bar lissabon please, not sure where the East station is.

Yep I sussed the indian was near the unionsbrau.
Ahhh, I feel like I'm getting somewhere.

Bit of a stagger back to schillerstrasser though!!

Cheers fella
Owain Glyndwr
yep. reccommend pre-dinner drinks at Unionbräu, then off to the Dehli for a ruby then onwards to Hofbräukeller for post-dinner drinkies. good call, Grinner.

edit: back to Schillerstrasse takes about 28 mins by Tram and then short hop on the bus.
Grinner
Taxi should only cost 4€ each...

G
Owain Glyndwr
20 people, five taxis, 4 each. yeah €4-6 p.p. well worth a taxi ride.
Grinner
Sorry, Off topic, Slightly...

@ OG...

Why dont you stop posting, go to the pub and just forget you other plan... ph34r.gif

I am sure the other half will have forgotten by next Monday when I return...!!

Not enough, and letting in 2 was criminal.

I hate Bayern München almost as much as I hate The Arse.

Then you'll be pleased when we finish them off.

The Ruby will narrow the group down a bit, and cabs everywhere, except to the match.
The drink/Ruby plan sounds excellent though biggrin.gif
Sin
Ballack's too 'kin arrogant to ever be ashamed
Cobb
I notice you have a web site, I can't seem to access it though.
Is it down?
If so, what type/style of music is it all about?
Sin
No, I just checked - it's working fine.

Zero bullshit rock 'n' roll of our own making.

You have to choose the pigeon hole for it - we can't be arsed with all that.
Cobb
It was me.

I didn't want a category exactly, just a gist.

My kinda music, it rocks, good enough.

Don't spose you got a gig going while I'm out there?
lol...thanks for all your help mate, keep it banging.
eurovol
Cobb, Go to Moosach and eat at the Alter Wirt Moosach. The place is awesome for that true Bavarian small town flavor and it is on the street car line. If your lucky, the local group will be playing "oompah" stuff.
TexasTornado
Cobb,

Come see us at the Twisted Bavarian. We make our salsas from scratch and you can get cocktails here worthy of the posh places in town without the attitude. We are laid back, casual with great food and drinks.

For a good burger and sports, The Arc International Sports Bar.

No sorry mate, we just started recording a proppa demo (the stuff on the website was either done in June 2003, when we'd been together only 3 months, or June 2004 when we did it on the cheap and got the recording all wrong). So we NEED to get a good demo together. We aim to be done and dusted so we can start playing live again in mid May.

Sorry sad.gif
