Okay.. tooth be aching... root canal calling... anyone know how much this is gonna set me back? And better yet... can anyone recommend a nice dentist who does a good root canal AND speaks English? I have private insurance (or will by next month when I go get this done) and they cover 60%. But I have a feeling this is still gonna be expensive... sad.gif

Had one several years ago and only cost to use the cow bone replacement stuff, but that is optional.
Had mine done in Pasing by a very good dentist. Be sure to get the knock out shot. Tell them immediately that simple novacaine won't work on you. OUCH!

very true. had it done a couple of years ago, and after a couple of needles could still feel the screwy thing going in to drain it. probably the sound is scarier than the pain, although the pain is still there.

sorry, got nothing nice to say about root canal op's!

Lots of info here abiout English-Speaking Dentists.

As for cost, dunno. Seems a lot of dental work here is not insurance friendly (if you are lucky enough to have insurance that covers dental) and very costly sad.gif Rates also seem to vary widely from dentist to dentist. Maybe just call a few to get an idea of rates and more importantly, the difference in rates.

Not sure about price over here sorry - but I second that advice to get knocked out.
Had a root canal a while ago (not in Germany) and basically ended up getting up and leaving half way through. Went to another dentist who knocked me out properly and had to redo everything they'd started. Thank goodness for drugs.

Or you can knock it out yourself with a hammer and screwdriver, and save all the $$$ biggrin.gif

Root Canal...this can be painful...and expensive. blink.gif

I got mine done a year and half ago in germany costed 4500 Euro ...by the way I also have private insurance.

It was like this...this was the first time I went to a dentist in germany...and was amazed by their service and diagnosis...that was all becoz I am a private patient cool.gif and I guess the dentist wanted to pay his yacht rolleyes.gif
He gave me a quotation of 2500 Euros and managed to ask for 4500 Euros...shameless and then I had to shell out 700 Euros becoz I have to pay Selbstbeteiligung...

My suggestion:
> go to 2 different Dentists...take a quotation from both of them...compare and send it to your Health Insurance company..get a approval from them in writing how much they are going to pay...only then go for it.
I did the mistake of only asking my agent and not getting it approved from my insurance company...which costed me 700 Euros
Also depending on the number of years that u are with this insurance company they pay that much..normally in the 4th year you have no upper limit...otherwise they pay you only a specific sum...written in their fine prints.

All the best...hope that it is not that painful

i thought root canals are free here??! i know the law changed at the start of 2005, so not sure if it's the same anymore, but i am gesetzlich versichert and never paid a penny for the actual root canal and have had 2 - at 2 different dentists. (if you need a crown on it afterwards that's about 500 eur)

Thanks for the advice! I've actually already had one in the States, and although it was not the funnest thing I've ever done... it wasn't as bad as I thought. I only had novacaine, and could feel it a little bit.. yes... but not that bad. I want a dentist like THAT again!

I will definitely submit the quotation first, thanks! If anyone else has a great dentist they can recommend (or I guess it's really an oral surgeon) then by all means, shout out!

I work with a root canal specialist and he speaks english- try Dr. Richter- Rosenkavalier pl 18 - number 92 87840 and say I refered you. He uses a microscope that sees the base of the canal, so there is less risk of infection staying in the canal afterwards and also digital xrays- less radiation. Also- his injections are painless! Believe me!

I had one done in September. I have private insurance. This is the second one I've had done here in Germany(too many Gummi Bears, I think). Both were covered by insurance 100%. I have the bill in my hand - 917€ by Dr. Wolfgang Käfer, Destouchesstrasse 34 80803(in Schwabing - Josesphsplatz). He speaks excellent English and he has an assitant in the office who is South African and speaks perfect English. The first Root canal was around 815€.

I also have an Oral Surgeon who speaks even better English and his receptionist is married to an American and she lived in the U.S. for 3 years so her English is great also. PM for that number if you want it. He's in Schwabing.

Costs depend on if its a front tooth (1 canal) or a premolar - 1-2 canals or a molar with 2-5 canals. Yes! There can be 5 canals in a 3 rooted tooth! That is why microscopes are important.
kitkat64
The first one was 3 canals - 815€ and the second 4 canals - 917€ and no pain(other than the injection). It#s just gross to hear the scraping sound!
