Where to buy US organic baby food - Germany

German brands of cereal/oatmeal

chun_yil
We have started solid for 6 weeks now, my baby is not very interested, untill a friend of mine recommend "Heathy Times" Baby cereal. My baby finally started to eat more and she loved it. The only problem is we are running out of it..and she doesn't seem to like the regular German brand rice/ wheat mix , ex. Hipp. Even the can food, she is only interested in the "heathy Times" , and won't touch the "hipp" at all.

I check the official web site, and it won't ship to Germany.

Does anyone knows anyway to get them in Germany?

Many thanks ~

Michelle & Miya

Sorry - no source for Healthy Times but what about other grains or combinations (esp. other organics besides Hipp)? Wheat/Rice is a really glutenous, gluey mix so I don't blame her for not eating it. DM has a big selection of different grains and brands, most organic. Baby Haferflocken (oatmeal) and instant Dinkel (spelt) were/are big hits in our house. They're easily digestible as a first food and also much more nutritious than wheat/rice. You could also try your local organic supermarket for alternatives. As you'll find in general as your daughter tries more and more foods over the next half-year or so, it'll be a case of trial and error anyway as to what she likes right off the bat and what she starts to enjoy eventually (or mixed with other stuff). GL!

Thanks Dear,

I will go to DM and try to find it. Feeding solid is truely a fight ....... and test

Thanks liebling for that tip, I was also having trouble feeding my little guy the Bio rice flakes from Hipp. Makes a face and either spits it out or refuses to open his mouth!! Will also go and scour the DM shelves.

Chun Yil, if you find anything that your baby finally likes, do tell!

Hey there, Blackcurrant and Michelle and Miya.

A good rule of thumb when it comes to solids (esp. grains) is to try them yourself and see what the stuff tastes like to you. Honestly, I wouldn't touch rice flakes (rehydrated) if you paid me - it's pretty gross -- so I wouldn't blame a little one for spitting it out. Unsweetened oatmeal and/or Dinkel are much nicer (slightly nutty flavor; you can mix them with breastmilk or formula to 'sweeten' them a bit). Our toddler still eats Dinkel or oatmeal for a warm porridge breakfast (we still buy DM's Alnatura Bio grains for age 4 months and up), though made with cow's milk, big chunks of fresh fruit and a swirl of plain yogurt now. Yum!

Also, don't forget that first foods are culturally-specific and not really scientifically/medically based (except where there's a suspected allergy or digestion-related health concern). So you need not necessarily start with grains. You can go ahead and start with veg (as Germans do - with [naturally sweet] carrots) or individual mashed fruits (apple, pear, banana) or even (gasp!) with proteins such as (baby-safe, pureed) fish. Your pediatrician or a good baby-nutrition book will tell you the same thing. At the beginning it's just getting your baby used to having something in his/her mouth and (potentially, eventually) swallowing a bit of it, so don't be discouraged if most of it comes out and/or if you get some sour faces. It's not necessarily a reflection on the menu. Sometimes "a spoonful for mama, a spoonful for baby" helps, too, as when you open your mouth wide the baby's mirror neurons will fire and cause him/her to open up wide, too. Anyway, I hope you both hang in there and let us know how you get on with other grains/foods. Before you know it, you'll be the ones sharing first foods tips!

GL!

Thanks a lot for all your info. and sharing.
I went to DM today and couldn't find the baby Haferflocken, will try another one tomorrow and look for Alnatura as well.

I found my baby likes it better when she could hold the food herself (because we give her some baby rice crakers from Asia)..she really likes it. And she would put her whole hands in the food, then just ear it out from her fingers....but to take the food from the spoon ... Of course, the floor and the highchair end up with more food than her ...

Blackcurrant, maybe you could try to give your baby some food with your finger first, that helps me to have my baby open her mouth.
As well as turn on her favorite music (HOUSE MUSIC in my case!!)... I live in Schwabing area, and if you are near by, maybe we could meet up or something? I'm joining the healthy and nutrition workshop for baby next month as well. Also some baby seems to like "banana" because the taste is similar to breastmilk / formula... but mine is not a big fan of any fruit...YET.

Hope these would help you!

(still hunting for baby oatmeal).

Just thought of something: it's not organic but you could try Koelln Schmelzflocken (Haferflocken/Oatmeal), which is avail. at most supermarkets and shops like DM. When mixed with liquid the flakes dissolve, smoother than normal oatmeal but it's 100% oats nonetheless.

You're absolutely right liebling, the rice flakes taste less than desirable and its quite starchy/sticky. I did indeed taste it and, well, to say the least, I'm just happy I'm not at the receiving end of the spoon!! Unfortunately the little guy has a mild case of reflux, so I was advised against Oats for him ... However, I am going to get some Dinkel stuff to try. Have also been doing the - open my mouth wide so he mirrors it part - yes he falls for it.

I accidently came across Hipp ''Hirse'' or millets in English. Gave him some today and ... ta da ... seems to like it. Its a big improvement over rice flakes!! In 3 days time he will be served that together with pear. Lucky him!

Michelle - Good thing my fella gets along with the spoon, he opens his mouth and has no problem to eat from it. Phew! He also seems to be a Profi when it comes to swallowing the mashed stuff. I will be sending you a PM .... and maybe we will see each other at the Nutrition course!

Thanks you both!
