Weekend trips out of Munich

Places worth visiting, direction south

Can anyone recommend any towns or cities worth visiting south of Munich?

As I live north of the city I know lots of places that are worth a visit (Friesing, Landshut, Erding etc) but I'm not really familiar with cities south of Munich - in Upper Bavaria.

So if you had someone coming for a weekend where would you take them?

Disgusting Surprise
Hello all,

Just a post to ask does anyone know of any nice places to go to in Bavaria? I remember travelling around last year and finding some really great places out of the way, minus the tourists of coarse. Places such as Passau and Lindau for example. As for Munich a great place was Possenhofen beside Starnberger.

So does anyone else know of anywhere good to go in Munich / Bavaria? I'm heading there for a week from the 8th to the 15th and have seen most of the usually sites such as the Hofbrauhaus already. As well as that, it would be a bit of a break from football.

Suggestions welcome!

Wasserburg and Augburg are well worth a visit, as is Rothenburg (a bit further away though). Or take a trip to the Alps, Mittenwald being my preferred destination. Or Berchtesgaden, also a bit futher away.

Oh, or Freising, with the world's oldest brewery smile.gif

Or Andechs of course.

If you'd like to visit the (arguably) oldest city in Germany - Kempten im Allgäu. Trier likes to make the claim but geographically speaking it makes no sense.

Kempten offers an interesting archeological dig of the roman settlement Cambodumun.

The medieval market/festival season is about to start - they usually take place in olde castley type places around Bavaria. What kind of thing are you looking for?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned:

In 1873 King Ludwig II of Bavaria acquired the Herreninsel as the location for his Royal Palace of Herrenchiemsee (New Palace). Modelled on Versailles, this palace was built as a "Temple of Fame" for King Louis XIV of France, whom the Bavarian monarch fervently admired.

A must for beautiful lakes lovers is ACHENSEE - across the Bavarian/Tyrolean frontier, behind TEGERNSEE. But it is a wee bit tricky if you don't have the use of a car via this route.

Alternatively, it is well worth doing it this way (can be done daily). I'd suggest you put in an overnight stop at EBEN(Church with St.Notburga's remains standing over alter) or MAURACH (less expensive accommodation):-
With DB (Bayern Ticket) via Rosenheim to Kufstein
Buy local ticket there at the ÖBB (not DB sitting next) ticket counter to JENBACH
then take the over 100-yr-old steam cogwheel train up to ACHENSEE (or less romantically, local buses).

I know this area like to back of my hand. More info on request.

Not a full day trip, but also interesting: Go round the Ayinger brewery just outside Munich and reachable by S-Bahn.
