We are planning a move to Freiburg in a couple of months and would appreciate advice on what would be the best area to live. With two small kids - a 2 year old and a newborn - we are looking for a nice, family-oriented neighbourhood - green, clean, quiet, access to sports facilities, walking distance to kindergarten (btw, how hard is it to get a place in it?), yet an easy public transport access to the city center would be nice.

Perhaps this is a little late, but here it is. Vauban is the district in Freiburg that caters for children. It used to be a barracks for the French army of occupation, but now has many individually built houses and flats. I don't know if you speak German, but this set of links will start you off. It is located in south Freiburg.
