Greetings,
I will be moving to the RLP area in November with my wife and 2 children ages 11 and 9. My wife and I will be working in the town of Landstuhl and my children will be going to school there as well. We are seeking some advice/insight on a good town outside the Landstuhl area preferably moving southward away from the main American corridor of Ramstein / Kaiserslauten. We will be living in the area for 3-5 years and really want to make the most of it. We would like to rent a nice freestanding home with a good yard, close to parks where the children can play and bike trails where we can ride. We will have a pretty healthy budget for the cost of a rental. Also important to us is a town that would be open to Americans so that our children and my wife and I can socialize. It would be nice to be within walking/biking distance to food shopping/restaurants/and 1 good beergarden. Well, our knowledge of the area is quite limited so if I sound silly in my post its only out of ignorance ... appreciate any and all advice.
Regards,
David

Also wanted to add:
We will be commuting by car.
Studying a map I was looking at towns such as Oberambach, Bann, Mittelbrunn, Obemheim-Kirchenambach, MArtinshohe, Oberhausen/Wallhalben, Queidersbach, Linden, Hermersberg/Steinalben,and Hoheinod.
I know thats a lot of towns but it gives the general area that with the limited knowledge I have that appeals to me.
Thanks,
David

Hey David!
I recently moved to Landstuhl from the US and am currently working there. First of all, this place is fantastic! It's a beautiful area full of history, good food, and kind people. I live in Obemheim-Kirchenambach. It is like most of the surrounding villages; small, quite, sleepy, and relaxed. There is a large inflow and outflow of people due to KMC, so housing opens and closes quickly. The best time to find housing is in the summer b/c that is when most military families will be coming and going. I'm not sure what the housing situation will be like at the point you will be relocating. My particular place was listed for about 2 hours before it had three calls from serious buyers. I was just lucky enough to get there first. The best resource for finding listings is www.ahrn.com or a local newspaper called the KA that can be found at or around any of the local military bases. The military programs provide very good help in this way; they speak english and are experienced in the process that Americans must go through to relocate.
You should know that many of the villages are very small and do not all include pubs, restaurants, and markets. You may have to look at living in a larger village if you'd like to have such things close by. Regardless of where you choose, you have plenty of chances to rub shoulders with locals if you make the effort, even Landstuhl itself. There are three main school zones that American children usually attend, buses run to each town according to the zone they are in. Zone A includes Kaierslautern and Vogelweh, Zone D includes Sembach.
Also, here are several websites that may be helpful to you.

Hi Theophilus,
Thanks for the reply! Was good to learn more. I have been checking out the KA website but its very limited in what you can see. I cant log into AHRN.com because I am a civilian federal employee and that site requires a .mil or .dodea email address. The housing allowance I will receive seems as though it will be really substantial so I was just going to wait until I got over there and just work with a realtor. I also get temporary housing, etc for up to 120 days although they dont like paying past 90 days from what I was told. Same for towns, I am thinking I am just going to have to check them out and find one that feels good to us. As far as schools, I think my kids will be going to Landstuhl elementary since I will be working at the hospital there it would make sense, plus I have heard good things about that school.
The links you provided were great ... nice reads!
I fly in on November 9th so we are pretty excited!
