Biking from Giesing Bahnhof to the City Center

How long does it take?

I am a newbie at this riding the bike to work everyday - I like the idea - but am not sure how long to allow myself for the trip. Anyone know how long it takes to ride - lets say from Giesing Bahnhof to Koenigplatz - for a person who will use muscles they have not used in years smile.gif Am sure that once I get into the swing of biking again, the trip will become faster - but havnt been on a bike for a LONG time.

Thanks,
Babs

I ride all around Munich on a racing bike, on the street, where it's dangerous (not on the bike paths) averaging top speeds of 50-55kmh in proper bike gear (Not in a suit or pants) and still would be pushing 6min if I happened to catch the green wave all the way there. Hey mate, we gotta go ridin soon if your that fast.

32d's 5 mins is only less than 2km not from Giesing to Koenigsplatz.

And average top speeds of 50-55? What does average top speed mean? smile.gif Is that average speed or top speed? I can get to 50 fairly easily coming down the hill from Effnerplatz and about 40 usually on the flat. But then you are riding Rickschas all day so i guess its a different thing all together as far as fitness goes.

As for the original post, just try it and see how long it takes. Give yourself plenty of time first time so that you can take your time if you need to. After trying it once, you will have a baseline of how long it takes you. Give yourself more time if you need more, less if you think you can do it quicker smile.gif I dont think anyone can guess how fast you wil ride so just try it for yourself.

Eurobabs, your speed will also be affected by how many traffic lights are in between you and your destination and whether or not you stop for them. I recommend that you do until you get more used to how the traffic moves.

exactly showem, i wanted to say that you'll be riding through streets and have to weigh in traffic lights and such. i miss living in freimann whre i could get into the north eng garden and head to the city and have a pleasant ride to boot. sure i got the perlacher forest now, but only good for riding south.

Giesing (Bahnhof) to Königsplatz is do-able, I'd allow 20-30 minutes for a leasurely enough ride.

There's the hill to consider too (Giesing is higher than the city centre).

If it's too much, there's always the US line direct!

Eurobabs,
Also, take into account that if you ride too fast, you'll end of sort of sweaty - so allow extra time the first time and do a leisurely ride so you don't break a sweat.

An internet bike-route planner would be great, don't you think? I've considered riding from my place (Ostbahnhof area) to Feldkirchen where I work, but only know the A94 route, which is no good for the bike.
Tom17
Thats not entiiiiirely far off from the route I take, I could run over the map with you some time if you like...

@Kat

1. From Ost Bahnhof take OrleanStr North to EinsteinStr.
2. Make a Right onto Einstein Str. and go 850m to TruderingStr (On the Right)
3. Go down Truderring Str for 300m then make a left onto RiedenburgerStr. This should tak you Over/under the main road where A94 starts.
4. After 300m RiedenburgerStr curves to the right and becomes EggenfeldenerStr
5. Go down EggenfeldenerStr for 4.5km it will change names to Rappelhof Str. then near Riem it becomes RiemerStr.
6. Stay on RiemerStr (It curves to the right a few times) until it stops at Paul-Hennri-Spaak Str.
7. Go left on Paul-Hennri-Spaak Str. for 1.4km until you get to OttendichlerStr.
8. Go straight across OttendichlerStr. where the name changes to MunchenerStr./K18
9. Take MunchenerStr./K18 for 1.5km directly into Feldkirchen.
10. when you get to B47/OberndorferStr you can either go straight for 120m onto EmeranStr which becomes FeldkirchenerStr or make the left turn onto BahnhofStr which will take you to ummmm... the bahnhof.

Hope this helps...

Hi all, thanks so much for the replies - so I did it today smile.gif took 35 min, luckily had an extra 15 to spare (left myself plenty of time, just in case). Needed it to "cool down" after the ride. Home was ok as well - all except that killer hill getting back up to Giesing (which I will admit I walked half of smile.gif )

Thanks again,
babs
Gen
take the hill up from Candidplatz, it's the easiest way up I know. Lots of cars, but there's a nice wide bike path and the slope is much gentler than many other ones. If it's a detour then you just have to decide how much it's worth to you.
eurobabs
Thanks for suggestion Gen - will look into it.
Kat
@Darkknight - Thanks! Now all I have to do is memorize that... unsure.gif
Darkknight
@KAT

Print it out and glue to to your handle bars biggrin.gif
Grinner
wouldnt that go round the handle bars 3 times??? laugh.gif
Darkknight
Not if printed in small print...

Or do a test ride on the weekend..
