You can either do the 10km or 21km...

I'ld be interested in running this. If anybody would like to do some training in Munich pm me.
UpQuark
Yeti, how fast do you run? I still need some decent shoes, some time to train and some motivation, but I'd like to get back into actual, healthy, good-for-me (i.e. non-hash) running. I've never been anything better than very slow, though.
Lupo
I´d be willing to do this...did it last year, was worth it.
Yeti
@UpQuark

Not very fast, I have managed a few 20 K runs but my usual training is an 1 hour jog. Nothing dramatic. I want to survive to get my massive german pension don't I. I probably do 7 to 10 K's in an hour but that's pushing it. Apparently slower and more often is better for you anyway.
What TT events are you at in the next while ? As soon as you get your shoes we could arrange a run.

As for hashing, do not underestimate the importance of rehydration.

I was planning to run in the half-marathon ... there's a 6 / 13 / 21km race this coming weekend as well - Forstenrieder Volkslauf München - I registered (for the 10km run) in a blaze on enthusiasm yesterday, but now I've seen the weather's set to take a nosedive (4 deg and sleet on Sunday sad.gif )

This is also a good website for finding out where runs are planned: Lauftreff.de (in German).

@Yeti

I normally go out for around an hour and run about the same speed. When/where do you usually run?
Yeti
@jayhay

I live outside Munich (where no S-Bahn doth go, beyond the Pale veerily) so it's usually in the woods there . However if people want to meet up in Munich somewhere that's not a problem as I work in Munich.

Running in 4 degrees is better for you anyway. No overheating. And you can have a beer afterwards to warm up.
Lupo
Thanks Jayhay. May see you on Sunday.
gideon
i've done the half before, but am out off practice for the dstance, would quiet willingly do the ten without problem if there's a bunch of people up for it.

I live @ Nordfriedhof and run in the north part of the English gardens. It's a really great place for it. I lived in Berlin for 6 years and I could jog along the canal in Kreuzberg (being careful to avoid tripping over litter, lesbians and/or punk dogs. A bit like Paperboy) or in the Treptower park, but the English gardens beats all that, hands down. My current favourite route is about 6-7km and really varied, two bridges, pretty much constantly alongside a river, perfect smile.gif

The one thing I miss like here is that joggers don't seem to nod a greeting to one another when they pass. In Berlin joggers always said hello to each other like that.

@Everyone ... I plan to run the half marathon in July and would be aiming for a time around 1:50. Getting some sort of training group together might be an idea?

Back when I was running regularly (sooo very long ago) I never ran much more than 10K and it typically took me at least an hour to do it. I could possibly manage a 10k without too much pain by the end of June, but as that time should indicate, I am not know nor have I ever been an athlete (hashers can back me up on this).

I would be up for runs on alternate Saturday or Sunday mornings (non-hash weekends, natch). If nothing else, knowing that someone else will be there to watch me pant and sweat like a woman in labor could be the motivation I need to get me out of bed for some exercise. Though I suppose that's a bit of a deterrent to others.

Next TT event at which I will be is curry tomorrow night.

@anyone/everyone

What about a morning run (10:30) on the weekend of the 16th/17th April, meeting at U-Nordfriedhof and aiming to run for about 45 minute (6-7km)?

If you're interested, let me know which day suits best.

Hi,
damn depressing reading this. :-( I would so love to participate! Did the Media Marathon twice, last time was two years ago. After that the doctors discovered that I have a so-called "Huftdysplasie" and told me to stop running altogether. I had serious problems with my right hip after the marathon (am - was a 11-12 km/hour female runner). I am not following doctor's orders, still run through the English Garten about 10 k's every day or every second day. My current doctor - a runner himself - told me it's ok to run.. but nothing more than 21k's max. Does anybody here have experience with this condition of mine? A friend told me that it's become fashionable to diagnose a "Huftdysplasie" amongst orthopaedic surgeons and that I should ignore it. There's a whole list of sports I'm suddenly not allowed to do anymore. Woe on me!
The Major.

anyone know a website that you can measure in germany a running route on a map of your local area.
I want to train for the 10km and it'll be my first ever road race, so I have a lot of work to do. Part of this is knowing how far you run on the road, so I know that i'm getting near 10km,

That would be a great tool for runners! Maybe I should set up a website.

Allow me to point you towards this Google maps and keyhole.com

In London there is this free mapping initiative. I am very interestd in this as I work in the carzographic field.

I run in my lunch hour every other day, just 30 mins. I'm thinking of starting to capture points with my GPS in Perlacher Forst.

Also although for rollerbladers check out Skatekarte.

Hey how did everyone get on. I ran the 10km for the first time ever and I quite enjoyed it really. Not even aching today. I would like to say I'm rather proud of myself, couldn't even run 2km 6months agao.

Any interesting stories of your day?? Beergarden beer tastes really good after an early morning run!

Did it twice. The route is ok, they give you a lot to eat as well (don't overdo it though!). I even saw a beer stand handing out free beer to the runners. Crazy Bavarians! Err, don't drink beer. wink.gif You start off at Olympiapark, go down town past Odeonsplatz, at the back of Marienplatz and then up towards Ostbahnhof. Untill here it's all pretty easy. Up towards Ostbahnhof it gets a bit steeper. Spare your energy in the beginning! Then you turn off towards the North, going past railtracks. Not-so-nice. You are heading for Oberföhring now. Nice green part of town. This bit quite easy. You cross the Isar and turn into the English Gardens. This is at kilometer 28 +-. The next 7 km. are done through the gardens. Very nice, but by now you should feel a bit shot. At km.35 you leave the English Gardens going past Osterwaldstraße (more eats here!) towards Elisabethplatz again. From here on it's back toward the Olympiaturm. Believe me, the last 10 km are the hardest so save your energy for that!

I enjoyed it thoroughly although I was disappointed at my time. I trained in the English Gardens following a programme. Depends where you live. You should practise long stretches on the weekends (up to 35km but not more), so it's obviously nice to train somewhere where you don't have to run in circles for hours on end to make up your training kilometers. Good luck to you!

Cheers, thanks for the route description ...sounds better than the London Marathon...its a bit of a plod round the city with no green at all sad.gif

Edinburgh marathon is a bit nicer ...on the cycle paths, but it can be a bit warm...even for Scotland dry.gif

and my favourite type of run...are the off road marathon with rucksack and lots of mud and hills...do you know of any off road runs here?? would be great to do a few in the lead up to the marathon...

currently running the Isar loops...about 17k ...and then it gets boring... and yeah a few loops of Nymphmenburg or the West Park...but any ideas for longer runs would be welcome... smile.gif

anybody else out there planning to run this year?
canuck
Here's a offroad run for ya, Swiss Alpine Marathon in a month. Try the 78km version on for size. Better yet, if somebody proves to me they actually 'attempt' the 78km version, then I'll buy them a 20 of Augie.

We have a Munich Marathon thread, there you can find out who is planning to participate. As for myself, I have to give it a raincheck. My days of marathon running are over. sad.gif
