Floods in the area of Alf and Zell

How often do they occur

Ancholme
Can anybody supply info about the flooding of the Mosel around Alf and Zell. I have found a couple of sites showing the flood planes etc. What I would like to know is how often the occur, how long is it before the flood waters recede, are the youngsters still expected to go to school etc, do people take their cars to higher ground and how much warning do you get. Any first hand experience would be gratefully received.

Hello Ancholme, i will try my best to answer. I have been here 2 years now and only seen limited flooding in Cochem. Zell and Alf are really low however and I think they were hit hard in 1993 and 1997. Personally I would not even think of buying there if that is your plan. Not all houses are built right on the front. Zell has many houses quite elevated at the back of the village. There are plans for flooding, road closures etc. There is a local paper that comes round telling you every possible thing that will happen. For example should the water reach 24 George street then you must use the B26 and go via etc etc Comprehensive it certainly is. There are other roads which normally take you over and around the flooded areas Life is expected to go on as normal as possible. As for the kids, they would have to carry on depending where the school is of course.
Hope this helps ,any other questions, ask away......cheers for now .....the landsbergadler
