Cheap but nice lunch places in Maxvorstadt

Hi!
My brother's girlfriend is doing a tour of Europe with a friend and they arrived in Munich yesterday night. I'm meeting with them at noon today to give them a little tour of the sights. To thank me, they want to take me for lunch. Thing is, they're students and so I'd feel bad taking them somewhere expensive, but would like to have a nice lunch, maybe sit outside...
I'm meeting them at Hauptbahnhof (the only place they've found so far), then I plan to take them to Königsplatz first and then on to Karlsplatz, where the walking tour of the centre will start. Not planning to do Schwabing and the englischer Garten till later in the day, so Schwabing is out. I'm sure there are loads of places but somehow I can't think of any. Got any ideas for me?
Grinner
Paulaner place just opposite the entrance to Sport Schuster...just of Marrienplatz.

It can be as cheap you like there...

Think I know where you mean Grinner (you mean the one next to Kaufhof don't you?), but can't seem to find any information online... don't happen to know what it's called do you?

There are lots of little Döner shops near Hbf, but if they can afford it (it's not too much), definitely take them to Augustiner on Kaufingerstraße.
kathie
I was thinking of there too IPJ, but didn't know what kind of prices we were looking at... do you happen to know a price range off hand?
Grinner
Why not just grab a coffee and cake in Rischart in Marrienplatz, then do the Beer and half a chicken at 16.00hrs ??

I would do that Grinner, but they've been at Dachau since 9:30 this morning and by the time we meet at 1 I'm thinking they'll be starving. I will make the suggestion though...
kathie
O.K, am just reading online that the Augustiner am Dom is cheaper than the Großgaststätte... anyone been there? Opinions?
interplanetjanet
Augustiner tends to have pretty typical prices (~10€). I'm not sure, but I imagine you'd be able to get something for about 8€ for the main, and then of course you have beer. When I was a student doing the Eurail thing, I ate there.

There's a nice chinese place in Sendlinger Strasse. At the bottom of KARE. They have a little ouside terrace that lovely to sit on if the weather agrees.Main courses around €4.50 and non-alcoholic drinks €1.20.

Otherwise try Saulslitos in Tal.They do a fantastic mexican lunch with all you can eat and drink for €8.50.

Donisl, right on Marienplatz, ...

... is about as cheap as a full meal gets in Munich. Very Bavarian (Schwein this, Schwein that). Around EUR 6-7 for a plate, as I recall. A live accordionist plays folk melodies several hours per day. It's bit touristy, but there are plenty of original Bavarian types dining there also.
profundo
Profundo's gal here.

You MUST go to Goetheplatz to the Doner Kabab place on the main street. They advertise the "jahrhundredsauce." The place is called the Salzburger Kabab, I think. It is run by one man and there is only room for about 2 people to stand inside.

If you are coming from Sendlinger Tor towards Goetheplatz, it will be on your left right before you get to the big intersection at Gplatz. The cost is 3.20 a sandwich. Go to the park across the street and enjoy!!! (I think I might just have to go today too.)
UrbanAngel
Hi Kathie - where did you go in the end yesterday? Was it any good?
kathie
How embarrassing... we went to Kilians *schäm*. After all of my questions and all your great suggestions, when we met up they told me that they wanted to sit down somewhere (so Kebab places were out) and they'd eaten nothing but pork for the past 3 days and couldn't stand the sight of it any more. So, when we were looking at the Frauenkirche and they spotted the outside tables at Kilians they decided they'd like to go there. Oh well!!

You MUST go to Goetheplatz to the Doner Kabab place on the main street.

The place is called Salzburger Bosna. and they do their "Grillsandwiches" on a longish-baguette-type bread and yes, they advertise a "Jahrhundertsauce", but when I saw this dark-yellowish substance in a big bowl, I thought it was something solid, so I opted for tzatsiki sauce instead. It's on Lindwurmstraße, street number maybe 70. next to the Zöttl backery across from the movie theatre direction of Sendlinger Tor.

Go to the park across the street and enjoy!!!

the park is about 300 m away on the opposite street side, going away from Goethplatz. that's where i had my lunch today.

oops, forgot to add. this will probably be a place to go to for your döner fix after Wiesen since it's pretty much the Goethplatz u-bahn entrance.
