How to be a vet assistant/technician in Germany

Advice on veterinary accreditation and schooling

murfpurf
My husband and I will be moving to Germany where his family is in 2 years. Currently I am in the graphic design field with a Bachelor Degree from a state university here in America. However this year, I have been thinking of changing my profession to become a vet assistant/tech as that has been my lifelong dream. I've put off from going to vet school here due to the fact that we are moving out from America as well as now isn't the right time for me to go back to school due to economical reasons. But in a few years down the road when we are settled in Germany, I desire to pursue an animal specialist career. My question is, what is the accreditation or schooling needed to be a vet tech in Germany and how to go about getting into a vet school. Or if I finish a degree for it in the US, what do I need to get licensed to practice in Germany

We haven't decided on which city exactly to move to, anyone with any information about this in any city at all will be appreciated. Thank you!

In Germany the Tiermedizinische Fachangestellte is an recognized trade.
You can ask for help to find an educational course @ Arbeitsagentur, but I would not really expect any use from there. More help the local Industrie- und Handelskammer offers. Expect that the work language will be so- called German, you should speak German fluently and understand the most of the local idiom.

Hope this helps.
PS.: Better you will have brought copies of all testimonies, attestations and diplomas you ever got to Germany.

In order to go to vet school (university), you need to speak German, have an equivalent of German "Abitur" (graduation which entitles you to study), and provide lots of other documentation. For the University of Munich, information for foreign students can be found here (general info) or here (special information for vet medicine). For enrolling in the vet program, you need to have knowledge of Latin or enrol in a course for Latin terminology. I am not sure whether there are English speaking programs in Germany.

If you apply for professional education (Ausbildung) as a vet assistant, or an animal keeper (Tierpfleger), you will compete with a lot of 16-18 year old over-enthousiastic German girls, who dream about working with animals (And will wake up later to see that it's a really hard job with low salary). Teaching and working language will be German.

i knew an american woman, born and raised in germany, german mother, america pa, and she opted for the u.s. passport, who studied veterinary medicine in munich. she was not allowed to do the 2 years vet-doc training after her studies because she was not a german citizen or rather, priority was given to german citizens. she would have had to get a vet-doc to sponsor her and since there were more applicants than position, she was not able to complete her training to become a vet-doc. (she ended up working at a vet clinic as an assistant only cause that is all she was qualified for).
