I read this morning in this
TZ article that I am not the only one to notice the Glockenspiel sounds out of tune since the expensive renovation about 2 years ago. Some of the notes were a full half=tone off, "The Last Rose of Summer" particularly ghastly. In this story some professionals try out the keyboard-operated part of the mechanism and sure enough C is now C sharp--and several others are equally off. But they say that no one was aware of it--is this true? Has anyone here noticed?

I noticed it sounding wretched several months ago. Didn't give it much thought since I avoid Marienplatz anyway.

The Süddeutsche Zeitung said that it was a loose contact, the bell is now a proper c and no longer a c#.

To a musician's ear, a carillon can sound "out of tune." Poorly tuned bells often give this impression and also can be out of tune with themselves. This is due to the unusual harmonic characteristics of foundry bells, which have strong overtones above and below the fundamental frequency. Foundry bells are tuned to have the following set of partials (overtones):
Octave above prime
Fifth
Minor third
Prime and strike tone resultant
Hum tone (an octave below prime)
Additionally, there is a major 10th, 12th, and 15th which are not typically individually tuned, but are usually present anyway. They all combine to create a "resultant" pitch, which is in unison with prime on a well-tuned bell. Properly tuned bells emphasize the fundamental frequency of the bell.
thank you wikipedia

I have noticed (maybe just my ear) that it seems to very with the weather. Yesterday they sounded really terrible, Saturday when we had crappy weather, less so.
Still all the tourists clap and clear regardless - just like the locals do back home when they see a black and white magic moving picture box in an antique shop window.

It's much more fun to scream when the knight almost gets knocked off his horse.
