Where to live when working in Vilseck

Suggested towns, commuting from Nuremberg

Hi

I am a Physician Assistant looking to move from Houston to Nuernberg Area in two month, to start a civilian job in the military base in Vilseck Germany. I would like to try to live as close to Nuernberg as possible. Is that a realistic option in terms of taking the dbahn? Which towns in between should I be concentrating on to try to find a flat?

Hi aschenputtel,

Amazingly, there seems to be a direct Regional Express train between Nürnberg Hauptbahnhof and Vilseck (which I'd never heard of), which seems to leave hourly and takes about 45 minutes. Sadly, it doesn't give the price.

More details here (in English): http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en?ld=212.139&seqnr=1&ident=3l.010391139.1250672919&rt=1&OK#focus

The stops in between are:

Hersbruck
Hartmannshof
Etzelwang
Neukirchen

Your next challenge is to find a Toytowner who knows anything about these towns.

Does anyone know if many Germans commute this far to go to work? Are the regional express fares coverred if I buy a monthly pass?

I was stationed in Vilseck for 4 years, and I would suggest living closer to work than to Nuernberg. We came to Nuernberg religiously by rail, and had very few problems navigating the system and the connections to and from Nuernberg are very good. It's a good hour's ride from Nuernberg to Vilseck, then another 10 minutes by car from the Vilseck Bahnhof to the Post Gate, so you would need some sort of reliable transportation to get you onto post in the morning.

P.S. I used to buy a Mobi-Card (A Monthly Ticket) that covered my travel to Vilseck-Nuernberg and all of the Subways/Streetcars/Buses here in the city. I don't know if that's possible now, or how much it would cost, but I would definitely ask.

any suggstion where else (maybe somewhere in the middle) can I find a good place to live?

Hmmmm, are you going to buy a car to drive to work, then take the train into Nuernberg? Do you want "Super Sleepy German Town Life" or slightly bigger German town life?

Living in Vilseck is usually kinda expensive, but Sulzbach, Grafenwohr, Essenbach, and even Amberg are pretty affordable and not a long commute to work. The bonus is from Sulzbach and Amberg you have a fairly large sized town that you live in, with connections up to 11PM ast night to Nuernberg back and forth.

The commute from one of those places will be about 30 minutes to work on post, and 45-60 minutes to Nuernberg.

I probably will relocate with my car. Am uncertain how long it will take me to learn what I need to learn to pass the test and start driving in germany. would like to live somewhere there's a bit more action then starry starry night.

You should be able to take the Army Europe test, which will be alot easier for you. With the train system here, it should be no problem to live closer to work and take the train to where there's more action.

As for an apartment, check the other threads here about English speaking realtors. Maybe one of them can reference you to someone out in that area.

Weiden isn't a bad spot, it's pretty close to Vilseck too. I would also consider Amberg, which is a longer commute but the town is pretty active.

Yes, Try Weiden i.d. OPf. I live ca. 6km from Weiden in a village called Etzenricht. (Vorwahl 0961)

Etzenricht? Drove through there last weekend on my way to find the allusive "Blaueweiher"... Would be really helpful if you could give me some directions. We gave up in the end and ended up going to the Badeweiher in Weiherhammer...

I agree with the rest of the group about living closer. However, if you don't mind commuting for more than an hour then I would suggest you stay closer to Nuremberg since it is a large city. Then, again, you could always commute to Nuremberg when you like. Just keep in mind that the train doesn't run after midnight and won't start again until 5-6am if you plan on going clubbing in Nuremberg.
