If you want to take a look at the schools in your area, get your address up on Google Maps and then type Grundschule in the search box. All the primary schools in your area should show up. My knowledge of the system is pretty limited, but it is my understanding that schools are zoned and as such you get little choice in where your children go to school. I would contact the Hamburg Welcome Centre - they should have all the info that you need.

Another option is to go to the schools directly, they will know how it works. My daughter's school (she starts Sept 1 ) will have some admin staff back tomorrow, so I assume that applies to other schools too. Worth a try. I believe the kids start in the last week of August (unless they are starting school for the first time like my daughter).

Along with the state-run schools there are is also a Catholic school on Eulenstr and a Steiner school on Bleickenallee, and of course the International School - but you may need to sell one of the kids to afford to send the other two for that last option .

Oh, and if your youngest is going into 1st grade, don't forget the Schultute, there may be tears if they are the only one without one.

Good luck!

I'd check the Schulinformationzentrum (School Information Center). That is actually where I was told to go by the Welcome Center, for all the info on the schools and school system here. They (SIZ) would be able to tell you not only about schools in your area, but which schools in the city offer programs for children of specific language backgrounds. I'm not sure if they speak English there though, but I'm sure someone in there can, even if they'd rather not. :)

In any case, you can find the SIZ at U-Hamburger Straße inside the Einkaufszentrum there.

So very thankful to you All!
I'm going by to the school center tomorrow and find out. I thank you for your replies and funny inputs (Purple hoggy)I browsed around and yep were still deciding which one of my girls we sell off to put the other two in that rich school.. anyhow, Now that we know where to start i can get that one scratched of "my to do list" moving on to other issues. Thanks! C.

Hi,
you could try the Rotheschule - my children went there and were happy.
Another school is in the Trenknerweg - also quite good - from what other mothers have said. Then there's the Gesamtschule Max Brauer (Bei der Paul-Gerhardt-Kirche 1) which is also good. I wouldn't worry about your children not speaking German - most schools have extra language lessons for foreign children. They go back to school on the 27th August.
Good luck!
