I noticed an article in the SZ announcing that from August 1st it is no longer permitted to drink alcohol on Munich's public transport, in an attempt to make passengers feel safer when travelling. Apparently it was already forbidden to drink alcohol at U-Bahn stations.
According to the MVG's press release, the restrictions follow a survey last year on "Subjective Safety on Munich's Underground", which found, amongst other things, that the majority of passengers feel uncomfortable when faced with drunken or alcohol-drinking passengers. It didn't say which group the passengers felt more threatened by.
In another study earlier this year, 83% of those asked were for an alcohol ban at U-Bahn stations, and only 8% against. The press report said the study was representative, but doesn't say how many were asked.
The station alcohol ban was consequently introduced in February this year, and has now been extended to U-Bahns, buses and trams.
The SZ article is slightly confusing though: it also states that the ban includes S-Bahns, although these aren't mentioned in the MVG's press release, and don't officially belong to the MVG.
Sorry if this has already been mentioned elsewhere. A quick TT search only came up with something slightly related in the Berlin section: Rules on drinking alcohol in public.
