Hi
Just a quick question. Where in Munich is Friesling? Or maybe it's called Fiesling. Could anybody tell me?

probably Freising, I guess - it's to the north of munich, about one hour away, I think. or maybe a bit less.

Thanks Topsy, so it's most likely Freising. Is there any street name that I could type into a map page to get an idea?

Don't know any streets in Freising, sorry...
Google on "hotels in freising" or summat, see what address comes up, and then whack that in your map page. That's what I'd do.

Freising appears to be approx. 38 km from munich. would that be an accurate description?

Yup, about that. The S1 goes there every 20 minutes. Found a flat?

Hey, well we got an email today from this girl who is offering us a two room apartment in Freising. I would take it, because it's only €500 a month but is there any point if it's so far away from munich? Would you know of any other places? I've sent loads of emails but that was the actual first positive response we got back. Dan

Hmm it depends on the size I guess.. how many sq m? Is it close to the SBahn or would you have to take a bus?
There's quite a few offers for flats in the Classifieds Section here, or you could try online newspapers like Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
I just heard from someone reading over my shoulder that Freising is generally quite expensive, as it tries to be exclusive Maybe something closer would be (a) cheaper and (b.) well, closer. You're sorted if the flat's near either an UBahn or SBahn station basically. UBahn is preferable, as they go every 10 mins instead of 20.

It's quite a long way out... how big is the flat?
Also, where are you going to be working?
Unless you can actually find a job in Freising, you've got the transport costs of getting there and back every day as well. Freising is in zone 12, so you'll be paying over €100 for your travel card every month (if you get a bar job or something you can get a green card, that'll set you back about €50, I think). You might end up being better off paying a little bit more and getting a flat more central.

Here's a link to see where these places are on a map, and see what ring they're in like Topsy said, and check the price out :

I'm working in Freising at the moment. Basically next to the airport, nice old town, relatively frequent S-bahns. It would be fairly far out (about 35 - 40 mins on train from the Hauptbahnhof), would make sure you're really close to the S-bahn station.

buggers up your social life, living that far out. always to make sure you don't miss the last train etc etc. OK some people do live in Freising and there are pubs in Freising but nothing compares to Munich.

here's the train timetable from karlsplatz to freising
like OG said, you're screwed if you miss your train. don't forget the pubs open late here, and you don't want the train timetable cramping your style, really, if you're only here for a bit...

Everyone above is pretty much spot on. I live in Freising.
Advantages:
1. Small town atmosphere. However, this is NOT the quintessential Bavarian small town. Because of the proximity of the airport, many pilots, stewardesses, airport staff, etc. live here, or rent rooms here.
2. Close to Airport (approx 15 minutes by car/bus)
3. Close to Munich (25 minutes by train)
4. Less "Shicky micky" factor here
5. Avg price of a Helles about 2.50
Disadvantages:
1. While the social life is not bad i.e. it has a university, and a few good locales, it does not come close to Munich IMO.
2. Last connection from Munich during the week is at 0045. It´s the S-Bahn which takes about 45 minutes (train is much faster but last train leaves at 2345).
3. Same rent prices as parts of Munich (about 10€/m2) i.e cheaper rent is not a reason to live here.
4. Avg price of a Helles about 3.00
I´m moving in the next 3 months to Munich proper or Augsburg...
