Strangers in the night, a foreigner in Hamburg

Looking for friends but finding it difficult

doriangray
Hello!

Being a foreigner (Israeli/F/33) here in Hamburg is not always easy, and with all the new friends and people around me I find myself sometimes looking for more.

Sometimes I just want to call someone for coffee 15 minutes in advance and not 5 days in advance.

And sometimes I just want to talk English and I do not care that I "live here for 3 years and should know German by now".

Also, how come Craig's List of Hamburg is dead?!

Anyone?!

I can truly relate about wanting to call someone on the spur of the moment to have a chat and coffee or glass of wine, a walk in the park or whatever.

This is one of the biggest challenges of my social life. I don't like to make plans as I prefer to live my life more spontaneously, gauging by how I feel and what I want to do on each day versus making plans for some distance day in the future.

Regarding the speaking English, I'm getting more positive feedback in my community from the German storekeepers who have become so accustomed to me speaking English or pidgeon German now that I'm speaking more German with them.

There's no shortage of people in my life for me to speak English to so I really now want to make more of an effort to express myself to the Germans in Deutsche.

Regarding looking for more friends, I'm not looking for any friends, as the more friends you have the more time and effort you have to expend to maintain the relationship. I'm not compelled to want to spend any of my discretionary time cultivating and maintaining new friendships, it's simply too much effort for me at this time in my life.

look at the TT calendar for Hamburg. even start a regular meet up yourself, you may meet some new people that are spontaneously free in the future.

I am always open to meeting new people. I am in my 40's but love to meet new people. I am kind in a similar situation trying to find people that would be interested in doing activities or simply hang out. I am originally from Germany but lived for 20 years in the US so I feel a little more comfortable in English these days. I live near Hamburg. Feel free to send me an email.

Hello,me again.

It's been awhile since my last post.

I am happy to say that I got some cool and nice replies and I cannot wait to meet everyone!

I was thinking about meeting up together, on a hopefully sunny afternoon (we will pay for this amazing weather badly, right?), maybe at Altona Balkon for coffee or beer.

However, since I am overloaded with a family visit (Yay! Finally!) I will have to wait a bit before I plan anything.

OK, just thought about update you all (and want to do it in a private message but for some reason... it is not possible unless I do one by one... - got too used to Facebook...)

Wishing you all a great week!

I am interested too! Spur of the moment post for the weekends or whatever to meet for drinks or dinner or whatever would be fun. I want to meet some friends who like to have a good time and laugh.
