Elixia, Germany's fifth largest fitness chain, filed for bankruptcy two days ago.

840 jobs are at risk.

Looks this was caused by the punters flocking to discount fitness clubs such as McFit.

More from sueddeutsche.de: Fitnesskette insolvent, Elixia verlässt die Kraft.

who would pay 100€ to go to the gym?

Sorry MB... and I did a search too . Oh dear - what vicious retribution will the Mods inflict on me now?!?

Sad to see but I left Elixia for McFit. The new McFit in München Süd is on three floors, clean, spacious, lots of free parking, exellent machines and is open 24 hours a day 365 days a year and for under 20 euros a month. 100 of them in Germany now. I would like to see them spread all over Europe. Some are planned for Switzerland so I was told.

I was a member of Elixia (Fit Plus) but got annoyed they kept increasing the monthly fee every time they opened a new place. shame cuz they had good fitness classes.
go to the gym at work now.
BattalionBoy
Yeah good fitness classes - if you wore ear plugs not to go deaf.

always thought the music was ok. some of the teachers were a bit arsey though.

Elixia say their doors are still open and people were training at Berg-Am-Laim-str today

I'll put another plug in for McFit. Having a gym open 24 hours a day is great. Unlike gyms in the US that open by 5:30 or 6 a.m. on weekdays, the other gyms here had weird schedules. Not opening until 8 or 10 am? How do people with jobs or children workout here? I don't want to check a schedule to see if I can go work out, or not be able to go to the gym on a Saturday morning (but okay on a Sunday morning!) like some places around here.

i wish there was a McFit convenient for me. I currently use the gym at the office but would change if a McFit was opened close to home.

If you're in Bogenhausen then why not use the fit-star at Leuchtenbergring - IMHO the best gym in Munich

originally i thought it was inconvenient from where i live as there are no good public transport links but since i cycle everywhere, it isn't really that far at all, so may reconsider when my contract is up. I'd still like something a little more convenient, though (yeah I'm fussy, but i know that if i have to make an effort to go there, i won't, so it has to be either fairly close to home or work or on my cycle route between the two.

TBH Owain I trained at McFit for two years - and it's great - but fit-star is a WHOLE lot better - there really is quite a jump in the quality of equipment they have.

IIRC doesn't McFit allow you to get out of a contract within 4 weeks and Elixiar not?
