So a friend of mine who lives in SF, and has done the "Hardest Century in the World" and has his 'triple crown' or some crap...(2 double-centuries in a month or something insane like that...) was visiting and I told him about this race.
He said "You need to get in that. Seriously."
Ok. So Im signed up for "B" and Ill be slogging up those hills behind the rest of you.
Now just chant with me...
"DFL, not DNF... DFL not DNF..."

Yesterday I had my registration fee for Streke C refunded to my bank account. No explanation. Has this happened to anyone else?

Anyway, the guys from work are doing a flat training tomorrow. 16:45 at the Dornach trading estate if anyone wants to join. We will be going up to Freising.

Your name is still on the entry list with a tick next to it so should be ok. Maybe they heard you were doing it on a cross bike and let you enter for free.

Hey,
I was just checking out the site to see if my name was still on the list, but I can't find the list! I found a signup list from before Mar 1st, but nothing more recent.
I could have plans for the night before if I've been removed from registration...

Oh yeah, thanks. I don't know why I couldn't get there from mtb-festival.de. I clicked on just about everything!
If people are getting there bright and early Sunday morning by train, let me know. My brain doesn't work that early in the morning and I'd like to tag along.

I guess getting the BOB down there on sunday morning will be easiest.
However, registration ends at 7.30am and the race starts at 8am!
... Which could be a problem since the first train doesn't get there til 7.44am..

Well that means we would have to either.
1. Go the day before to register and stay over in hotels
2. Go the day before to register and come back
3. Get enough cars that can take bikes.
4. Hire something that can take us + bikes?? (sprinter plus a car?)
Any other ideas??
edit: Shall we do a tally of who is going so we can work out the best option? I think my friends from work have all made their own travel plans.. But will check.
How accurate is tench's tally?...

I'm probably going down to tegernsee on the weekend... depends on the weather...
Probably Sunday though... I want to suss out the aueralm climb and the other one on that side.
see what I feel like after and maybe also the other two... I'll leave wallberg ... Kinda done that one to death

Guys, if I remember rightly, someone mentioned that the course is pretty much entirely fireroads..
Just wondering whether it would be a good idea to go for semi-slicks.

I'm down in tirol this weekend so can't make it for a recce. Would appreciate a lowdown though if anyone does go..

Would anyone else like to go down?

Just got back from a few days riding in ost-tirol. First time riding up real hills and I'm suddenly feeling not so optimistic about riding uphill 2700m over 78,4km
Something tells me I might be a little tired at the end of it

Who else is doing Streche C besides me and Tench? Anyone else foolish enough? Is anybody going down on Sat to register? Sorry, I am sure that this has been discussed already, but I can't be bothered to sift...
Ok, I bothered to sift... I could take one other person (mit Bike) in my car. Can't see heading down there the night before to save on 1/2 hr of sleep... although it is tempting!

Hi,
I don't normally post ( i know... one of those people that just takes and takes

) but I have been reading the thread and thought I would come clean.. i have just registered for C
I will probably go down on saturday to register, and will drive down again on Sunday morning. I have space on Saturday, but not Sunday, so if anyone wants a lift on Sat, then no problem.
Am a little worried about the course but have done a few of the climbs but each time in isolation, so if anyone fancies comparing notes on Saturday that would be cool.
In terms of my standard, trust me I am just looking at survival and may even bail out at the end of B instead of going up the Wallberg...
Anyway better go, and If I dont see you before I hope it goes well for everyone good luck...

Now that sounds like a plan... actually the aueralm at the top of the first climb does great beer, we could just settle in there for the day and short cut the whole route, might be a bit of a giveaway if we turn up plastered though...
I'm all fer boozin' and bikin' but if the other descents are anything like the first one, I'd want to have full command of my capacities...cuz that thing is STEEEEEEP!

Actually you are right the Aueralm is pretty steep on the route down, quite rocky in places as well, I had a puncture on that downhill once... scary... definitely needed my spare shorts!!

It looks like it won't be possible for me to go down on Saturday and stay the night. I'm begging anyone who's planning to go down Sunday morning to register and has space in their vehicle, to PM me. I can make my way back afterwards if the fact that I'm doing strecke C and you're doing strecke A/B bothers you, and I can meet up anywhere in the city so as to provide the least amount of inconvenience.

OK, so who's stupid idea was that then???
Did anyone on strecke B do slower than me? I did it in 5:21.50 ( I came 156th lol)... I am happy with it but it does seem I have lost all the uphill ability that I had a few years ago, it was 1st gear all the way for me.
At least some of the downhill was fun :-)

Excellent day out!
Nearly vomitted on the first climb...Crashed on the second downhill. Span out like crazy between the second and third hills...I think nearly ten people passed me... chain came off just for good measure. The third hill I relaxed and made good time. Flew down the descent passing at least the same amount of people and started the next climb with a goddam pucture... The same ten sailed past again...bastards...
I really though I couldn't do Wallberg at this point. Legs were completely gone and by this time I though I'd never make the cutoff point for the timing... somthing like 12.30... But I did! and I was so revved up by the crowd that I went straight for the C channel... not really meaning to but soon I was clear and headed for Wallberg... felt like a bit of a bad dream.
I have to admit I walked most of the climb up... but no-body passed me??? strange but still I was experiencing such low blood sugars I was starting to see things and hear shit that wasn't there...For some reason the theme to Wallace and Gromit was pounding through my head!
Anyways I made it down the other side without crashing into any of the big purple rats that were chasing me at this point... Back in with a placing of 79 and a time of 5hours 34mins...
There ya go then... Congrats to Tom17 and also Tench with an unbeleivable 5 hours on c-strecke!...Kit witha sterling effort! and Crotaline with very brave one with a 30Lbs bike.
And everyone else!

Dude.. I did NOT do C Strecke.. I had an incredibly slow time on Strecke B

.. Or did you mean the unbelievable bit just for Tench? C Strecke in 5? Yep, thats pretty fricking good!! lol
Other than my new bike computer continually resetting itself, I had no mech problems (except for the low powered human mechanism). Sorry to hear you were so thwarted with probs, how did the crashes happen? Were you running low tyre pressures to get those punctures?
I was running a rock hard 60psi to help me with the climbs (needed all the help I could get!) A little on the high side, but still enough grip on the downhill rocky bits... though they didnt help the pounding that I got from the saddle... ouch
Still aching...

Jun 6 2005, 8:12 am
'ere listen...I don't think think it really matters what time or what place! Strecke B was bloody long and brutal which everway ya look at it
I think I flatted 'cos i overtook quite alot on the descent into Henerer which forced me off line and into the rubble that probably did it. I had my tires at 60 psi, so I wasn't running them low or anything.
luck of the draw and all that...
lurch
Jun 6 2005, 8:27 am
Oh, and the crash was on the second descent because I was running pretty close to someone who cut into me on on a left turn... I don't think they saw me...I slammed on the brakes to stop me broadsiding them and my back end washed out and I was into the trees before I knew what happened.
Luckily I didn't hit any of them and nothin' was busted on the bike
Descending didn't seem to be much of a strong point with some of these guys...I was surprised how many were mincing downhill hanging onto the brakes
Come to think of it they were probably the same people who toasted me on the climbs
Oh well... all down to experience!
Anyone up for another one??? I think Rulpolding has one in a couple of months.
Anyone??? Anyone at all???

Red one-piece

whattareya tryin' to say?
Yep that's me ... I kinda though that walking would be faster than grinding away on the granny ring and for the most part I was right! I've seen before, that over around 20-25% hills most people go slower on the bike than walking and on at least the third climb I was right. I didn't notice too many passing me on the second either.
It also has the advantage that walking stretches out the hamstrings and the calf muscles leaving them fresh for when you do get back on the bike. I didn't feel like I was ever going to cramp up in the whole way round. And yesterday ( the day after) I wasn't even tired. It's not the fastest way of getting round but probably the least painfull.
I was running a 44/20 which was alittle too high for the first climb at anyrate, But overall I think the course was alittle too flat in many places for singlespeeding... I was spinning out around Gmund and was passed by a few there... Same thing around the end of strecke b and the way back from Wallberg. I suppose there is pros and cons to anyway of doing it... For me, one gear is not a better way, it's just more fun!
