After about six years of roadworks, the Richard Strauss tunnel is finally set to be opened on Saturday, July 18th.

Situated in Munich-Bogenhausen, the tunnel forms part of the Mittlerer Ring ring-road, and also connects to the A94 autobahn.

But warnings are circulating in the press and on the Internet about the 12 speed-cameras, permanently installed in the tunnels. Called "Geisterblitzer" in German, these digital cameras are equipped with an infra-red flash, invisible to the human eye. Drivers won't know when the cameras are active, and also won't know if they been caught, until the fine notice arrives in the post.

Finally, I've been looking very much forward to this going under Einsteinstrasse and Prinzregentenstrasse. Anyone know if there'll be a Blade Event through the tunnel before it opens for cars like they did for the Petuelring?

there was a Tunnelparty last weekend, so i doubt they'll do something else. The party was packed but quite good fun; I've never seen so many under 30's in Bogenhausen before.

Boohoo. Don't speed, you don't get geistergeblitzt.
I'm going to rent a car for the sole purpose of cruising this tunnel after having spent years of my life stuck in traffic jams to and from work on Richard-Strauss-Strasse.

@SB: doing 59.999 in a volvo? Nah, do it in style, get that bi-plane again and FLY through it?

I'm imagining some guy, thinking that they don't go off at 5 over the limit, so doing that speed through the tunnels, to and from work every day, until the fines start pouring in - 4 per day, and for a couple of weeks.

And yes, I'm imagining that I could be that guy.

AFAIK the speed limit is 50 kph in the tunnel, Tommy and I were doing a good 110 kph. But maybe we can fly under the radar ...

I doubt the tunnel is going to stop much of the traffic congestion. It'll just built up at that next intersection (going anti clockwise anyway), which is the real problem.

If the cameras use infra-red flash, then just install stronger/brighter IR LEDS around your plates.
This way if the camera blitz's you, the plate won't be readable as the resulting picture will have the
plate details washed out..

And the next police officer inspecting that will rub his hands in glee.

Bürgerfest on Sat. 18th July at Böhmerwaldplatz at 11.00a.m. for anyone interested.

If installed correctly, they wouldn't see it unless they actually got up really close and looked.
Last time I checked most cops catch speeders/pull them over while they are in their cars,
not by looking at the plates 6in away. IR light can't be seen with the naked eye so they
arn't "just going to see it".

@DK You could mess around fitting such things. And risk getting caught. And hope that it works. (I've read reports that in the speeding picture you see dots where the leds are but they do not obscure the lettering.) Or you just slow down.

How about just observing society's rules and not speeding? Much cheaper in the long run.

This sounds like one of the things Mythbusters tried out to conceal number plates. None of them worked!
