Do you intend to leave munich? When?

Toytown Germany > Discussion forum > South Germany > Munich > Life in Munich
Editor Bob
Do you have plans to only stay in Munich for a fixed amount of time, or are you here for the long haul - i.e. until you get bored of the place or get an offer on somewhere better?
Malcolm Spudbury
I have no intention of leaving yet - in fact right now I'm thinking about buying a flat or house here if I can afford to.

If for any reason I decide to leave Munich permanently, it certainly won't be to go back to the shit hole that is the UK. I never want to live there again.
don_riina
As soon as I can convince the other half to move back to Barcelona.
kathie
I'm planning to leave in 3 years or so... I'm at uni, and have another 3 years to go... and then I want to move to the countryside..still Germany, and it's quite possible that my other half will still have to work in Toytown, so it might not be that far away... but the whole traffic jam as soon as you pull out of your parking space, stressful, thousands of people whatever time of day you go shopping, expensive way of life has to go... plus I want to have kids someday... and I want them to be able to play on the street in front of the house, and not to have to get in the U-Bahn etc etc in order to reach some kind of greenery...

But for the moment, I'm enjoying city life..
Melodia
I've been here for 24 years...

Although many in my field see my job as a Bavarian dream job I see it as a stepping stone. Sure if I were from around here and had no dream of hitting the big time and was content with enough cash to barely call it a living but were guaranteed certain things like job security and pension after 15 years, then I might make a stab at staying. Colleagues to my left and right are offering advice on what to do with my kids so they don't feel like an auslander (when I have them in 8 years) and telling me to buy a car, get a german computer, learn the customs, etc.
Two year contract. That is about as long as my wife and I would be able to stand living away from home (USA) regardless what foreign country we are living in.

I voted for the two year category and I see that I fall within the 66-percentile! smile.gif

Showem
I think that means the actual poll closed before, so now you are just adding to the previous votes.
DrivinWest
2-4 years but Paris is my next stop followed probably by New York or Austin.
Presh
I´m leaving in 2 months. Not by choice. So I can´t really vote... I´m off to go cry in the corner now...
butterbean
My contract is for 3 years. Not sure what I'll do after that - back to SF, another city in Yurp, or maybe NYC.
parnell
It's a grand spot but South America is callin me , about another year I reckon.
Hazza
I was only going to stay for a year when I got here in July 2001...Still think I'll end up leaving, but don't know when.
Big C
Well I voted "a year or two". Because that's how long I'll have been here in total. Although I am actually only here another few months.
I have to say that having a finite period of time here is what keeps me sane. If you told me I had to live here indefinately I would prob. lose it.
It is an experience. A good experience. I like Munich. However it will never ever be home and I won't be sad to leave. But I will be back to visit.
BeautyIsTheBeast
Well... I wouldnt vote for any as I already left -.- It wasnt my intension to leave tho I wanna be there as long as I can but as my contract ran out... I have to go home but I will be back there definately :-)
pepper
Well, I intended on going back a couple of months ago, as just finished my three year contract, but then signed a new permanent contract, so can stay as long as I want, but guess I will finish this year off and head back !

Four years is enough for me !
Katrina
I have a lifetime contract from my employer so I'm be here for the foreseeable future. I don't know whether to laugh or cry about that but seeing as Herr Indoors has just put an open bottle of Augustiner next to the laptop, I guess I'll be laughing then.
Katrina
MysteryMan
I'm staying until I've climbed every Alp over 2000m (Germany + Austria) and I haven't been keeping count.
noddy
i might leave if i can find somewhere that i think i would prefer... but in the mean time i'm getting cosy...
Jimbo
End of September and back off to London - Munich is nice, and from many points of view nicer than London but I'll be paid a lot more back home, and I won't have to look at, deal with and speak to Germans all day in London.

Here, Here!! I second that!!

If there is any possibility of me moving anywhere, then at this moment in time, it would be the States.

Eventually I may finally finish studying...so far I've spent my whole life doing it...
And when I finally get my PhD in about 2 or 3 years time from now, then I will actually be able to get a job as a professor! And get paid decently!! Money, wow, what is that?! But I am kind of guessing that all the good jobs will be back in the U.S., which is probably where I will end up. But it is hard to tell at this point. I wouldn't mind going to work at a university in the U.K. for a couple years after this though.

@3 Lions - Good answer. ; )

I still don't intend to leave just yet, but I decided not to buy the flat. I don't see myself staying here for much more than another 18 months. Not sure where I'll go next - maybe France and then Canada. Could even end up in Japan if certain things turn out right. I definitely won't be going back to the UK.
Elfenstar
seeing as I just moved here, I think I'll stay a bit, at least 2-3 years. bf's been in munich for 4 and i think he's ready to move onto bigger and better things. if he had it his way, we'd be in nepal, but his goal is berlin so we'll see.

sadly, he doesn't want to go back to the u.s. maybe it's the "been there done that" mentality or he really hates u.s. politics. me too, but it's home.
MysteryMan
I guess it's just me an Katrina then smile.gif and I'm getting my teeth done today! Wayhey!

50% of Americans (and the number is growing daily) aren't too fond of Bush either. He'd certainly have company! Well, maybe not in Texas, but in the greater 49 states he would.

I don't think I could stand working in the US for any real length of time (to visit for a holiday, sure, but not to live). I could probably put up with it for a year or two, for purely financial reasons, but that's about it. Canada would be better, but would still suffer from the work ethic point of view (i.e., hardly any holidays, being expected to work weekends, poor job security, etc). If I move, it'll probably be to somewhere else in Europe.

world cup.

Speaking of which, I will be departing from Munich on April 20th and moving into NYC. Hold the tears... sad.gif

Yeah but where in the States. I mean it's a very large place and very different in different places. Which state is a start!
Personally I couldn't live there (at least not in the places I have visited) but I would love to have an extended visit to somewhere like Calif. to enjoy the sun and feel like I'm in a movie!

Now were talking. I could happily go to Montreal or Vancouver.

Your leaving on 20th April fusilli ? Wow...

Hope your having a going away party ! 17th ?
Big C
Nah, on the 19th. We want to put him on plane back to NY still drunk on Helles. So he never forgets the wonders of Bavarian beer.
bubblylady
I think he should be awarded for the longest farewell party in TT, he was partying for 3 weeks and I guess he will be in top form for his last week end smile.gif

Umm eh not really. I've worked in several major U.S. cities and spend a year and a half in Montreal with frequent business trips to Toronto. I doubt you as a European would notice much difference (except for the French in Montreal). There are some subtle differences but the work mentality is the same.
randy
I'd like to stick around for a) the world cup and cool.gif to see if I can pull off a startup biz.

However, just coming back from a vacation in Cali, I find it rougher each time I return to Munich; mostly just from the lack of diversification and entertainment options (plus it's refreshing to switch into subtle humor and be understood by the majority of people).

Maybe next stop will be Australia, as I've heard it's quite nice there.

I've visited several states, and been to canada twice. Maybe it was just my experiences there, or the places I visited, but personally I felt much more comfortable in Canada (and it had nothing to do with having the queen's head on their coins!).

Which is why I said "...but would still suffer from the work ethic point of view".

Canada is more (my opinion) open to the world and more European (British European) than the U.S., which could be a reason why you felt more comfortable there. The differences are nevertheless still subtle in my opinion.

Given that the work mentality is the same, I'd probably go to the U.S. if not only for the reason that the salaries are higher and the taxes lower although I did have a great time in Canada and certainly do not regret having gone there!
