As a kid I was often at the Speedway in Edinburgh with my Dad. I stopped some time ago, but I was pleasantly surprised when I moved to Hofheim, to find a speedway track and team. Speedway is very popular in Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, Russia and to some degree in the UK as well as smaller interest in the US and Italy. Diedenbergen's track only hosts 3 or 4 meetings per year disappointingly, but this weekend I visited the European Championships Semi Final 2 in the Rhein-Mein Stadion, Hofheim-Diedenbergen.
The track is a good size and the crowd was not too bad, maybe a couple of hundred. Not really a stadium, more a banking to stand on, but the weather was warm and sunny and it was good to see some speedway for the first time in a long time. Cost €14 pp so not so cheap, but when only a few times a year, that's OK. There were riders from Russia, Holland, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Denmark and a Czech I think. The Poles, Danes and Russian's seemed to be on better form, German's not so, but I suppose that's a function of the size of the sport in their respective countries.
We left before the end, as heavily pregnant wife was not too happy with the heat and noise. Not to self, make this a 'blokes' event next time. Next time is in August with a Bundesliga match between Diendenbergen and Landshut.
If anyone's interested, it could be a good way to spend an afternoon in August.
That is all
