As someone in perhaps the mid-afternoon of my life I was considering how you should or should not spend your time on this planet.
I reckon the system is back-to-front 'cos generally speaking by the time most people get any serious money they are too old to have fun spending it. However...
0-15 At this age you react only to the next 5 minutes. There is no looking ahead and no looking back. Not always fun 'cos school is often a drag.
15-20 This should be an exciting stage when you discover sex, drugs, alcohol, music etc. You will make mistakes but it should be a blast.
20-30 These should be the serious party years. You should be young enough to party late, shrug off hangovers, sleep around and generally burn the candle at each end. Hopefully you can also fit in the start of a career.
30-40 At this point you will probably be settling down with someone, perhaps producing babies. You should be confident in yourself, hopefully have a settled career path. Still should be able to find party time but maybe only once a week.
40+...dunno...but be interested to hear some thoughts.
Question: Do we think it is correct to have some vague plan? Or is it better to take one day at a time and ignore chasing careers? Is it better to have babies in your 20's perhaps?

Well, since I've only been 40 for a few months, I would say it's more of the same(as 30s).
I think though that a lot of us are re-thinking our careers(having done this same thing for 18 years, I need a change!).
But, the important thing is not to get caught up in what society thinks you should be doing(having babies, settling down, getting married, having a career, etc). Just do what you want to do!
From 30 you start regretting all those missed opportunities: the girl who wanted to take you and your mate back home, and you said "I don't think I could do it and look at his hairy arse at the same time." The girl who you thought was joking when she inveited you to a swingers party. The affair you could have had with the babe, but respected your ex-wife too much, and all the time she was having an affair anyway.
Every birthday fills you with a sense of dread for the weeks leading up to it. You bed stupidly young women and wake up in the morning with nothing to talk about. Life becomes a chore.
Then one day *BINGO!* you hit 40, and you just don't care anymore. Life becomes fun again, and you become determined to grow old disgracefully.
Party on dudes!

I am!

Don't plan! It only brings misery

That doesn't mean don't think about the future, but I like this phrase :
Life is what happens to you while you're busy planning it.

Discovering sex starts at 15?

Cool posting Sin! Made me think 'cos I spent a few days skiing last week with a group of 10 guys in their late 50's...and they still sure know how to have fun!!! Couple of them are seriously hot off-piste skiers and do stuff that would scare 90% of people out there.

is when you find the 20-30 bit extended itself to cover the whole 30-40 bit so you haven't even started on that yet and it's getting to be too late
Where were you BSF?
Maybe sex starting at 15 wasn't totally correct.
Fumbling, gropeing and making a fool of ourselves was a better description.

I suspect 15 is probably the average these days?
google says:
"" The average age at which most people begin having intercourse in the United States is 16.4 years for girls and slightly younger for boys."

Thanks JE.
Sometimes I think age is irrelevant. I know a guy who was born aged 53, and another who will be 19 until the day he dies.
It's all about your own personal Joy of Life.

@Sin You always regret the ones you didn't do.
I wish I had the energy I had when I was twenty coupled with the "not worrying about being cool anymore" of my thirties minus the late thirties hangovers.
And I'ld like my dad's Morris Minor back while we're on the wish list.

Actually my concern Sin was that I was in danger of becoming the oldest swinger in town. I seem to be getting worse rather than better. I spent Saturday evening in Hinterglimm nailing jumps in the Funpark on my snowboard by floodlight...next oldest person doing the same must have been about 20!
p.s. On the "greatest regrets" theme. I came home early from work once in my early 20's and the girlfriend I was living with was in our 7 foot square bed naked with 3 girlfriends. I was invited to join in but was too shocked at the time!

As has been said, each to her/his own. If you're the kind of person who needs a vague plan for each day then a vague plan for life might help.

Better? Dunno.
Easier? Yep.
More fun? That too.

OK - the full story is that my girlfriend and my brother's girlfriend were getting it on at the time (we discovered later). Also my brother was getting it on with my girlfriend's mum at the time, but I was 100% in the frame. My best mate (no longer) was getting it on with my girlfriend but I was also getting it on with his two ex-girlfriends. One of his ex-girlfriends brother's was getting it on with my girlfriend.
Needless to say it all kicked off eventually...
@Johnny English: No sense regretting passing on such opportunities unless of course you pass on them all. At least by feeling bad about turning down group sex one time you arent as likely to turn it down on future occasions. Perhaps at that point in time you didnt know if you wanted it or not. It took that occasion to know you wanted it, now you know that you do, you dont turn it down anymore and enjoy it regularly. Thats life. I think I probably freaked out and turned down my first opportunity too. And a few subsequent ones too..

Over 40...I like it best to stay at home with my pipe and slippers watching lovely old movies/ repeats of soaps on telly. I hate to go out especially to busy pubs like kilians/Juleps. Going to nightclubs like Atomic Cafe or Princip etc or any of the other places that the energetic young folk go, well really, how could I cope. As for music, nice mood music like Dido and David Gray are my faves, nice and slow with a lovely melody. How people can go dancing to 6 in the morning and then get drunk in some dive bar followed up with more drinking and dancing, then perphaps a beer festival or 2 I'll never know Tsk Tsk. The music is so loud, it surely must damage hearing and that endless drumbeat; bang bang bang bang all night long.
This is what being over 40 is all about, or so I am told...now where did I leave the labrador, Oh I remember in the Volvo silly me, I'm always forgetting things these days. Now where did I leave the keys...
