ANY excuse and YOU will have a go at "the Germans".

Your "right" to Sunday shopping.
Your "right" to wash your car and pour detergent into the watercourse.
Your "right" to tip 20% for shit service.

Whereis the discussion on here that the Federal Constitutional Court has said the vote on the Lisbon Treaty is not koscher?
Where is the discussion on here that the Federal Constitutional Court has said that the electoral system is not koscher and Septembers general election is in fact unconstitutional?

But hey, just slag the "Herrmanns" and say an immigrant on 3 Euros an hour packing your bags at Tengelmann's would make it OK.

Not get laid tonight MT? I read this earlier,I'm not a fan of Lisbon,in terms of democracy and democratic deficit,I'm pretty sure something like this should be a referendum-able issue in every member state.

The Irish will be going to the polls again in October.

Lisbon II
The Sequel

Probably doesn't really belong in this thread, but I was too lazy to look elsewhere.

I fucking hate this. "You got a referendum and you MADE THE WRONG CHOICE. Now try again."

The way I've heard it talked about in Ireland is that redoing the referendum for a different result is a slightly less shitty overall outcome than keeping it the way it is. It still leaves a nasty taste in my mouth that democratic process is fucked about with in this way. But I know very little about it since I've not heard Lisbon talked about in Ireland since June 13th last year.

It's always that way llees.

AT: "We shall ask the people."
LH: "Eh, we did, but they didn't give us the answer we wanted"
AT: "Then ask them again. Maybe switch the questions around a bit this time"

Now that Brian Cowen seems determined to sell them into debt slavery for ever and ever to prop the banks up and keep the IMF happy, I'm sure the Irish people will latch onto Lisbon like one drowning man on top of another, if only to make sure there's somewhere to emigrate to.

But they already had the confusing "yes when you mean no" clause AND the Thursday vote to keep those pesky students from fucking it up. There's not much in the way of shenanigans left.

If Ireland for the Irish by the Irish want out then hand the roads back before you go. Never had much of a history involving creative, efficient, good self governance and has spent most of it's life being robbed blind by the church or the elite or both. An Irish man once told me, 'the only person that can beat an Irish man is himself'. I suppose that's why they leave but never manage to, 'let it lie', so to speak.

We did the exact same thing with the Nice Treaty! The referendum failed in 2001 and was then passed in 2002. Perhaps Ireland should officially adopt a "best out of three" method of ratifying constitutional changes? ;)

except that 24 nations in the EU (remember there are more countries than Ireland) did approve and ratify the treaty. They wouldn't have to introduce it again if 13 countries had failed to ratify.

I remember - and the second referendum had the Thursday vote to keep the culchie students from adding their two Eurocents' worth as well as the "yes means no" clause.

Bastards.

Yes, but let's be realistic about it, most of them are utterly shite.

How'd I miss hearing about 24 referendums?

Let me know if you need help with that stirring spoon.

Don't tell me we are opening ourselves up for more abuse. I got a lot of grief here from people complaining about my fellow country(wo)men when they voted "NO". It did not help matters telling them I was not responsible, because I had not voted myself. Maybe I should not have said that I would have voted "NO", too, though.

This time around, I will hold my tongue.
