Does anyone know where you can go canoeing in the area? Now the sun's shining looking for new outdoors sports not involving snow.
Haven't done it since I was 11 years old in the lake district, so would be a complete beginner and probably like day introduction, day trip type thing.

I happen to know that there are at least 12 canoe clubs in Munich. I know that at least 3 or 4 of them have their boat houses down on the canal which runs parallel to the
Isar at Thalkirchen (next to the wooden bridge which goes to the zoo). A friend took me for a paddle there once. But I don't have any links or further info.

Out of curiosity is canoing harder for big blokes? I am 6'3" and over 100 kilos and when I tried a few years ago on the Thames it was very very hard...I only had to blink and I was flipped over.
In comparison all the kids and small people were whizzing up and down no problem. Normally I consider I have good balance etc so wondered if there is an issue with high centre of gravity or something???

Della,
Let me know what you find out, I would love to learn to go canoing, and do it regularly!

Hm I've been talking for 10 years about getting back into white water kayaking.
@JE Its not hard for a big bloke, but you need a canoe/kayak sufficiently buoyant for your mass.

Thanks Madaxe - yeah they stuck me in the same canoe as the kiddies...I think it was a "sygnet" or something. Anyway the damn thing was sitting lower than a snakes belly in the water, so gonna assume that was the problem and not just my incompetence. In my defence I can keep a motorcycle upright at a standstill so can't be that far off the plot.

Saw lots of
interest in the matrix.
Do you kayak here? Where? I have been sea kayaking twice in the ocean, but never river kayaking. I would be very interested in some "not scary, no rapids" calm kayaking (can you do it on the isar?). Anyone have a second kayak they want to share and head out on an adventure, or know where to rent? I need practice, but I LOVE it, and want to get out there.

Hi there.
I'm going to be staying in Munich between the 28th of June through the middle of August. I'd love to find some people interested in kayaking. I've been kayaking for about 15 years. Can take people out to learn but also looking for some expereinced kayakers for some of the more difficult runs in the area.
Thanks.

Hi,
I am new in Munich and would like to pick up canoeing or kayaking... have been on rafting expeditions in India, so am no stranger to whitewater, though am a little out of practice. Have you guys gotten together? Would love to join...

hi ya'll... i'm currently midway through a kayaking course with a group in thalkirchen... about 15 minutes south of city center. we go out on tuesday evenings from 6-9 and typically boat up the isar a bit to the surf wave and then get thrown around a bit up there. you can meet every level of kayaker there and whitewater weekend trips to slovania and croatia etc. are always being organized. PM me if you want some more info

Hi,
This is my first post on TT although I've been aware of it for a while now and found a great deal of very useful info here that has helped me and my family with our recent move to Munich - THANKS.

The reason that I'm posting now is that last week my kayaks arrived from the UK and now I'm itching to get out on the water but I don't really know where the best places to paddle are and what restrictions might exist. As you may know the UK water ways are highly regulated and access is very restrictive, with licences required for some rivers.
I'm interested in both inland-touring and in white water although it's fair to say that although I'm reasonably competant on flat water I'm still very much a novice on white water and I haven't yet found my roll (something I'd love to correct).
So...
If anyone has some advice on where to find a good social kayak club or wouldn't mind introducing me to the local water ways I'd love to hear from you.
For completeness I live near the Daglfing S-Bahn stop (on the S8 line).
And if anyone is interested here's a couple of links:
Packers - the club that I paddled with in the UK
Plas-y-Brenin - excellent paddling courses which I can highly recommend

Thanks.
I might give the club a go.
But I wonder if there are any TT's still on the water at this time of year?

Go down to Schäftlarnstr at
Thalkirchen. There are about 8 kayak clubs along the road there. A lot of them paddle up the canal, and then down a grade 2 white water section finishing in quite a nice play wave.
I used to paddle with the MTV (Männer Turn Verein) which is the most serious about wild water.
