I saw a movie recently which I won't name because I don't want to ruin it for people who haven't seen it, but in short the grand finale sees Planet Earth destroyed by a massive solar flare.
The Solar flare (Wikipedia) entry says that they can release as much as 6 × 10/25 joules of energy. Obviously it doesn't go in to the possibility of anything greater than that wiping out earth, but is it completely impossible that this could happen, or is there an outside chance? The Mayans predicted the end of the world occurring in 2012, maybe this is what will cause it?

As the Mayans completely failed to predict that they were going to be conquered and enslaved by a bunch of men wearing frilly collars and tights, I wouldn't take their forecasts too seriously.

Probably not this week. The sun has been extremely quiet on the bottom of this solar cycle.
Why worry about a flare, when we eventually have to worry about a nova?
Actually, just checking a bit: Our sun appears to be too small to nova, it will just go to Red Gian then fizzle without a nice big nova...

Nope. In order to destroy life, a solar flare would have to be MUCH stronger than anything our Sun is capable of.
Earth will not be destroyed.. rather it will be kind of burnt & shaken a bit!! Thats as per Mayan predictions, Indian astrology & NASA.
