Corporate Coffee... ...is what i am sick of. Are there any cool, independent cafes in Munich? Coffee fellows is certainly not the worst coffee chain ever, but I'm looking for something a little more homie. Something with sofas, a community bulletin board and maybe live music, open mikes or poetry readings. Does such a place exist?

Yeah there is not really anything quite like what you are after, but there are plenty of good places around Glockenbach - theres one on muller str that begins with 'e' that I can't remember the name of but it is quite funky.

there is a new cafe opposite "Edelheis" that looks very "new" Glockenbach ful of artisty tzpes. Just past the Pestalozzistrasse turn I think as you come from
Sendlinger Tor.

Never been there, but surely Cafe Bracha is unique and possibly what you're after. Don't go round on the Shabatt, though- they're closed on Saturday.

yeah - it's on the left as you go down the hill. It's always chock full of Glockentwats.

I walked past it today, It's called
Danesi.

Yep, Café Trachtenvogel is very chilled, don't know about events though.
If you're just lookig for good coffee (but in a stand-up place, unfortunately) try
VEE's, on Frauenstrasse just south of
Viktualienmarkt (over the road from the Nordsee shop). She learnt how to roast coffee from the guy who set up
Starbucks, and when he went mainstream, she stayed small and local. She buy the beans direct from the Haciendas, roasts them herself and bakes fantastic cakes and brownies to go with the coffee. Hmmm...

Muffins and More a coffee shop/bar/blues bar in
Neuhausen (Volkartstraße 25). Run by Marina (a Canadian from Toronto) and JJ (German) they have art installations, loads of jazz and blues CDs, a big selection of muffins, cheesecakes, pies and brownies made on the premises, real bagels (the New York one with smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers is my regular order), licenced bar with bar snacks and big selection of whisky, local pinboards and flyers and great coffee.
The fact that I live very close to it makes it even better.
It is small though and has stools instead of sofas.
U1 Rotkreuzplatz Volkartstr. exit.

There's one more or less next door to that Thai restuarant in
Schwabing - essentially if you walk through the university building where the White Rose stuff took place and come out the back door onto the street that runs parallel with Leopoldstr/Ludwigstr. it's there - just at the end of the Amalienpassage...sorry I can't be more specific!

I know this is a long shot, but are there any cafés that resemble an American college-town coffeeshop?
By that, I mean the type that is very laid-back, with couches, wireless, tables big enough to use for studying, late hours, etc.
Almost all the coffeeshops I have been to so far are very cramped and very stylish.
I understand that such a shop would have to pay really high rent, and probably not be so popular with Germans, but there's no harm in asking.

Starbucks has huge sofas, I imagine they're open late.. most 'cool, independant' cafés (where this thread was linked to) are small and cramped..

I have only been once to Cafe Trachtenvogel, and the service was shit beyond fucking belief and I vowed I would never go there again.

I've been there 3 times now, and the service was great. Don't know when you went, but I've only been daytime weekends/after work weekdays.

ninjavore- that's a good question i was wondering that too! also, do many people sit in coffee shops and read and just hang out? i asked a German friend of mine from Frankfurt and she said that people will meet and talk for a long time and coffee is very popular, but you do not see people sitting and studying, reading, etc like you do in the US. what are your opinions on this? b/c i miss my coffeeshops!

I went there once last year on a Sunday afternoon/evening and would always have to wait about half an hour to get a drink, and when I wanted to pay the bill I had to wait about 45 mins to pay, and the waitress was bloody insolent about it too, and it made me late for another meetup that I had that night. I was really pissed, especially as the waitress had the nerve to just assume she could take a tip from my change.

If you have something better to do than wait, there's an easy way to solve the problem. After asking once or twice and waiting 10 minutes, I stand up and start putting on my jacket, getting ready to go. Service usually come scurrying up pretty quick when they think you are going to leave without paying.

I did think about doing exactly that, but if I had done it would have only meant trouble for the other tters who were staying.
I don't think Showem was suggesting you actually skip out! Just make it clear that you're going if you've paid or not.
In a group situation though, you're right, the waiters/esses won't necessarily feel the pressure if only some of a group are leaving. Then you'd have to leave the money with someone who's staying, or go up to the bar to pay -- which is of course annoying and shouldn't happen and you shouldn't have to stand for it, and it's still risky as they may not get it off the table's bill correctly.

Ok, Cafe Aroma in Glockenbachviertel (just do a google search and it'll come up) is a really sweet little coffee house, just like ya grandma's kitchen. It's small, homely and does it's own cookies etc. One of the coffees has a rude name, which made me chortle...

There are soooo many coffees to choose from and they do a good breakfast too.
Oh and in winter they have lovely little window displays. Last year's really impressed me, cos they had snow balls dangling from the ceiling... It is really not as in your face as it sounds...
