I am thinking of taking the night train to Paris on Thursday March 24th to Paris. Definitely staying there for one night, not sure if I will extend.
As I have never been to Paris I really dont have a clue what to do and of course in what order. I definitely wanna see the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, Montmartre and Notre Dame.
I wanna stay in a hostel. Any recommendations? What are the do's and don'ts?
Would anybody be intrested in joining me?
Where are good places to eat, especially for someone travelling alone.

Montmartre is fantastic. Could spend ages wandering around there. Lovely view from Sacre Coeur (sorry if I am butchering the French spelling...it has been too long and my mind can only hold English and German at the moment...and not very well at that).

Have only been to Paris once but first impressions are very very expensive for food and everything. You could manage to live off crepes (mmm) however and there are stands seemingly around every corner.

Stay near a main station for sure.

Go to the Eiffel Tower early...as soon as it opens. Queues start very early and it gets jammed out with tourists. But certainly worth a visit. Also go back and see it at night (just from the ground)...very cool with the lights. Louvre was cool if you like art...I felt very cultured just standing in front of the Mona Lisa hehe.

Paris in Springtime is perfect!!!

Been to Paris the last 3 years in April. Every year was great...might make it 4 years in a row this April??!! But I won't be running the marathon this time. I stayed at 3-4 different hostels in Paris too...I'll try to remenber the names and give you feedback.

Best hostel I found was http://www.aloha.fr/an/hotel.htm. Good management and staff, clean, not too expensive and pretty close to the Metro. Two pretty bad hostels I found were Blue Planet, and Three Ducks.

definitely second Blimeygirl's tip about getting to the Eiffel tour as soon as it opens, you'll be queueing for hours otherwise

same for louvre, gotta get there early, early, early. missed it cause got there at 9.30 and the line was already deemed for a 2-hr wait. treated myself to a €6 piece of cake near the picasso museum instead.

W-Y-N (what you need) is the TTM equivalent for Paris.
The advice about the Eiffel Tower is spot-on.
well, the Irish pub of choice would be the Green Linnet, Avenue Victoire near Les Halles/Châtelet Métro (say hi to them from me).
A Paris Visite métro card can save you cash, if you are getting into Gare de l'Est you'll be able to buy one there, a 3 day pass for all public transport within the inner zones (not airport) will cost you about 18€.
Try and walk around a bit too, there's a lovely walk along the Seine from the Eiffel Tower towards Notre Dame.
Paris is expensive though, beer costs from ca. 5,90-8€ and is mostly Amstel but you can get Paulaner! smile.gif

There's an option to walk up the Eiffel tower (up to the middle, not to the very top), it's cheaper and I liked it a lot.

Restaurants are really expensive (but good smile.gif ). If you want to get great food without spending a fortune buy things at any of the delicatessen shops that are everywhere. Some of them even sell hot food and in general everything is delicious. Eating this gorgeous food on a bench near a fountain or in a park is the thing to do.
And the bakeries are, oh my god... best "patisserie" to be had on earth

Musee D'Orsay art gallery is good and manageable (the Louvre can be a bit overwhelming). The Pompidou Centre is a favourite of mine for modern art and great architecture. I've also been to the Catacombs, which are simply bizarre, full of human bones from when they ran out of space during the Plague (I think). Morbidly fascinating (and it does not smell). For if you like doing something a bit off-beat.

You can also go to the top of Notre Dame for a great view. And don't miss Sainte Chapelle if you like beautiful stained glass windows.

I prefer Musée D'Orsay as well, more authentically French, somehow. Even though it isn't really. And they have a v. nice café in there for when you get pooped.
